Saturday, Sept. 22 was a night of upsets in the mixed martial arts world.
The card for "UFC 76: Knockout"featured a series of former champions facing up-and-coming reality show fighters. It looked easy to pick the winners, but in MMA, things are never so easy.
In the main event, Keith Jardine (13-3-1) soundly defeated former UFC champion Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell (20-5-0), outstriking the former champion throughout the fight and knocking him down in the second round. Now, saddled with back to back losses in the octagon, rumors are circulating that "The Iceman" is considering retirement.
In the undercard, octagon new comer Mauricio "Shogun" Rua (16-3-0) was given a sound thrashing at the hands of fan favorite Forrest Griffin (14-5-0). From the opening bell, Griffin imposed his will on the top-ranked fighter from Brazil, and eventually won via choke with 30-seconds left in the third round.
After losing for the first time in the octagon, Diego "The Nightmare" Sanchez (19-2-0) returned to lose again as American Kickboxing Academy fighter Jon Fitch (20-2-1) out-wrestled "The Nightmare", escaping numerous submissions en route to a split decision victory.
