Friday’s Motor City Bowl (7:30 p.m. Eastern, ESPN) between the Florida Atlantic Owls (6-6 SU, 7-5 ATS) and the Central Michigan Chippewas (8-4 SU, 6-5 ATS) has been given a Detroit-style downsizing. (AP Images)

Four FAU starters have been declared ineligible to play at Ford Field: LB Andre Clark, OT Brandon Jackson, OG Kevin Miller and PK Warley Leroy. The Chippewas were 7-point faves (-105), but that line was off the board at press time.

This is not a small problem for the Owls. Sun Belt player of the year Rusty Smith (22 TDs, 14 INTs) is going to be playing behind a patchwork offensive line on Friday. Meanwhile, the Owls defense will sorely miss Clark (71 tackles) against QB Dan LeFevour (19 TDs, five INTs) and the potent CMU offense. And Leroy will be replaced by kickoff specialist Ross Gornall. FAU coach Howard Schnellenberger’s perfect 5-0 bowl record is in peril.
