Adam Vinateri missed a 29-yard field goal with 1:48 remaining as the Chargers beat the Colts 23-21 in one of the wildest games of the year.
Peyton Manning threw an uncharacteristic six interceptions but was still able to bring the Colts within two on the 11-yard line with 1:48 remaining in the contest. It seemed like the perfect setup for another clutch Vinateri kick, but the field goal went just wide right.
The Colts' defense was able to hold the Chargers' offense scoreless in the second half, keeping the game within reach all night. Despite having a career-worst six INTs Manning still finished with 328 passing yards, two TDs and one two-point conversion.
The Chargers jumped out to a 23-0 lead with great defense and play from their special teams. Punt and kick returner Darren Sproles returned the opening kickoff 54 yards for a TD and also returned a punt for a 45-yard TD. Second-year corner Antonio Cromartie got the start for injured DB Quentin Jammer, and he had a star-making performance. He picked off Manning three times.
The Chargers were 4.5-point underdogs in the contest.
