A key part of the defense that helped the New York Giants win the Super Bowl is leaving for Oakland. Safety Gibril Wilson signed a free-agent contract with the Raiders on Friday night. According to published reports, the contract is for $39 million over six years and includes $16 million in guarantees.
Wilson has 11 career interceptions and 52 games since being chosen in the fifth round out of Tennessee in 2004. The 26-year-old, who was raised in San Jose, has started for the Giants since his rookie season.
He was a crucial part of the Giants’ secondary that limited the New England Patriots to just 14 points. Wilson now becomes the third-highest paid safety in the NFL behind Bob Sanders (Indianapolis) and Troy Polamalu (Pittsburgh).
The Giants’ Super Bowl odds are 12/1 for next season while the Raiders are 100/1 long shots. The Patriots are 3/1 favorites.
