NFL Futures: Burress Would Improve Bears Odds

We're guessing that Plaxico Burress would rather play for the Chicago Bears than spend an entire NFL season in jail. But that's just a hunch. (AP Images)

Apparently media types now are following Twitter to get breaking news, and that was the case this week when super-agent Drew Rosenhaus tweeted that there was a third NFL team very interested in signing his current outcast client, former Giants receiver Plaxico Burress.

Of course, no one knows whether Burress will spend part or all of this season in jail because of those weapons charges in New York and how long his NFL suspension will be – and there will be one of at least four games. But there's a paucity of 6-foot-5 receivers out there who have made game-winning catches in the Super Bowl, and thus there is some interest.

The two teams prior to this week that most reports linked to Burress were the New York Jets and Tampa Bay Bucs. In fact, Bucs head coach Raheem Morris admitted recently that his club would be monitoring Burress case. And Tampa Bay receiver Antonio Bryant has lobbied for the Bucs to sign Burress (or the Cardinals' Anquan Boldin).

The Jets also inquired about Burress before the draft as they need someone to replace Laveranues Coles, who signed with the Bengals.

But neither the Jets nor Bucs are potential Super Bowl contenders.

So the team that makes the most sense in acquiring Burress would be the Chicago Bears. Right now at Bodog, the Bears are at 20/1 odds to win Super Bowl XLIV, but in getting Burress to pair with Devin Hester for new QB Jay Cutler, one could argue that Chicago would leap-frog NFC Central foe Minnesota on futures odds; the Vikings are currently 16/1.

Of course, the Vikings could change those odds again once the whole Brett Favre saga comes to a conclusion.
