Kellen Clemens was decent but it wasn't enough for the New York Jets (1-8) as they dropped their sixth straight decision, this time to the Washington Redskins (5-3) by a score of 23-20 in overtime.

New York led the Redskins 17-3 early in the second quarter but couldn't stop the run to hold on. Washington rattled off 17 straight points and took the lead on a Clinton Portis touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Jets tied it on Mike Nugent's field goal with just ten seconds left but lost in overtime as Shaun Suisham connected from 46 yards out.

Portis had a huge game for the Redskins, rushing for 196 yards on 36 carries. He gained 37 yards in overtime.

"I'm ready to carry this team," said Portis. "I've been telling coach that: Just put it on me."

Suisham's OT winner was his fifth field goal of the game, a franchise record.

"I'm glad they all went through," Suisham said. "I didn't do anything special."

Clemens replaced Chad Pennington at quarterback for the struggling Jets and completed 23 of 42 pass attempts for 226 yards and a touchdown.

"It's just so frustrating at this point," Clemens said. "We battled so hard for four quarters and then the overtime period, and we just came up short on a kick that didn't make it by much."

In other early Sunday NFL action:

Tampa Bay 17, Arizona 10 - Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner completed just 10 of his 30 pass attempts and threw two interceptions whiile Buccaneers RB Earnest Graham rushed for 124 yards and a TD. The Cardinals still have not scored a touchdown in the first quarter this season, a big reason they stand 3-5 and out of the playoff picture.

Tennessee 20, Carolina 7 - Vince Young wasn't great for the Titans, but he was better than Panthers QB David Carr, who managed just 107 yards passing on 27 attempts with 15 completions. Carolina intercepted Young twice and sacked him twice, though the big QB did rush for a score.

Atlanta 20, San Francisco 16 - The 49ers lost their sixth straight game on the struggles of Alex Smith at quarterback. Smith threw 38 passes and completed just 17 of them with three picks. Mercifully perhaps, the game was blacked out locally because of the first non-sellout in Atlanta since 2001.

Buffalo 33, Cincinnati 21 - The Bills ripped the Bengals' defense for 479 total yards in Buffalo. QB J.P. Losman threw for 295 yards, 165 of those to receiver Lee Evans. Marshawn Lynch also had a big game for Buffalo rushing for 153 yards and a TD as well as throwing for a score.

New Orleans 41, Jacksonville 24 - The Saints are marching back into contention. They picked up their fourth consecutive win Sunday over the Jaguars as Drew Brees threw for a whopping 445 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions.

Green Bay 33, Kansas City 22 - Brett Favre played hero once again at Arrowhead Stadium throwing deep off his back foot to Greg Jennings for a 60-yard touchdown with 3:05 remaining. The score put the Packers up 23-22, a lead which they didn't relinquish.

Detroit 44, Denver 7 - The Broncos were embarrassed on the road in Detroit. They fumbled three times, one which was returned for a score by the Lions' Dewayne White. Detroit's Shaun Rogers also returned a Patrick Ramsey interception for a touchdown.

Minnesota 35, San Diego 17 - Last but not least, the Vikings shocked the Chargers in a big way in Minneapolis. Rookie Adrian Peterson had a monster game for the home team, rushing for an NFL-record 296 yards and three scores. Peterson has 1,036 yards rushing for the season, putting him on pace to smash Eric Dickerson's rookie record of 1,808 yards set in 1983.
