One way to win is to make sure the other team doesn’t get any shots on goal.
The Devils traditionally are the best at it in the league. On Thursday, Martin Brodeur only had to stop 13 shots as the Devils outshot the Philadelphia Flyers 39-14 in a 4-1 victory at Newark, N.J.
Dainius Zubrus scored two goals, including the game winner. Brian Gionta and rookie Rodney Pelley got the other goals.
The Devils were -150 favorites on the puckline (meaning a winning hockey bet of $150 would net $100) and the betting total fell under five goals.
In other early NHL action on Thursday:
Washington 4, Ottawa 1: The Capitals stopped the Senators’ eight-game winning streak and paid a whopping +245. Viktor Kozlov had a goal and two assists in Ottawa.
Tampa Bay 5, Carolina 1: Shane O’Brien netted two goals as the Lightning pulled a big upset and paid +195 on the road.
New York Rangers 4, Pittsburgh 2: Goals by Brandon Dubinsky and Steve Avery led the Rangers to a -165 win at Madison Square Garden.
