Oh, the hooligans in the 300 section at Madison Square Garden weren’t liking this. Not even a lively rendition of the famous “Potvin Sucks” chant could take away the sting of watching the Rangers surrender a momentous victory to the Islanders’ young goalie.
Rick DiPietro is quickly becoming public enemy No. 1 among supporters of the Broadway Blueshirts. He stopped 18 shots Monday night and earned his 100th career victory as he led the Islanders to a 2-1 upset in the latest edition of the Battle of New York. The loss ended the Rangers’ five-game winning streak and dropped them to 0-3 against their Atlantic Division rivals from Long Island.
The Islanders paid +160 on the puckline (meaning a winning hockey bet of $100 would net a healthy $160) and the betting total was under five goals.
DiPietro blanked the Devils on Friday night and is emerging as an early candidate for the Vezina Trophy as the NHL’s top netminder.
Ruslan Fedotenko and Josef Vasicek scored for the Isles while Michal Roszival tallied for the Rangers.
