The New Jersey Devils continue to get offense from their checking line and on Friday it led to a victory.

Locked in a 1-1 tie with the Toronto Maple Leafs, John Madden scored short-handed at 15:48 of the third period as the Devils won, 3-2, in Newark, N.J.

The Devils were -155 favorites on the puckline (meaning a winning hockey bet of $155 would net $100). The betting total was under 5.5 goals.

Zach Parise made it 3-1 before Mats Sundin got a garbage goal with 32 seconds left for the Leafs. Martin Brodeur made 26 saves and got an assist in the win.

Madden, who has six goals on the year, and his linemates have made a habit of producing offense, which has been a necessity with Brodeur’s shaky start to the season.

In other early NHL action on Friday:

Philadelphia 3, Washington 2: Mike Richards had a goal and a fighting major as the Flyers won on the road as -115 favorites.

Florida 4, Buffalo 2:
Richard Zednik continued his resurgent play with two goals, including the winner, as the underdog Panthers paid +140 on the road.

Phoenix 5, Dallas 0: Shane Doan had a goal and two assists to lead the Coyotes to a road upset, which paid +190. Mikael Tellqvist made 35 saves for the win.
