Through two periods of action, it didn't seem like the New Jersey Devils were in any position to secure a much-needed home victory.
All it took was two third-period minutes to change it.
Paced by third stanza tallies by Patrik Elias and David Clarkson - the pair scored within two minutes of each other midway through the frame - the Devils rallied from a 3-1 deficit to defeat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 in overtime at the Prudential Center.
The Penguins took an early 2-0 lead on goals from Petr Sykora and Ryan Malone, two players who have stepped up their scoring with leading marksman Sidney Crosby out with an ankle injury. The Pens pushed that lead to 3-1 midway through the second period when Jordan Staal scored his seventh goal of the year - the Pittsburg's second on the PP - and seemed to be in cruise control heading into the third.
But the Devils responded with a 10-shot third period that saw them finally solve the strong play of Pittsburgh netminder Ty Conklin. Zac Parise set up Elias' goal and then finished off his night with an OT winner just 37 seconds into the extra frame. It was Parise's 20th goal of the year, which leads the Devils.
The Devils were -180 moneyline favorites at home for this contest, and the seven goals scored eclipsed the total of five set by the Bodog Sportsbook.
