The 2008 NHL trade deadline is set for tomorrow, and so far we appear to be experiencing the calm before the storm. No major trades have been announced, though a few potential deals have been quashed. There was also a big signing.
First up, Mats Sundin. He's staying in Toronto. You've probably heard about that already, but only if you actually care about hockey. And if you don't, you probably stopped reading after the first few words, in which case we can safely call you a bit of a pussy…because hockey rules.
"We looked at every different angle in terms of what my position has been and the situation of where I am at this stage of my career and all of that," said Sundin. "I think at the end, I followed my heart and I just haven't felt the desire to go to any other team or play for any other team at this point."
Second, Peter Forsberg has signed with the Colorado Avalanche after predicting just a week ago that he probably wouldn't return.
"Over the last several months, I have worked extremely hard in order for this to be possible. I am looking forward to putting this jersey on again," said Forsberg. "I have so many great memories of my playing days in Denver. I'm excited about helping my new teammates and former teammates in the coming weeks, and hopefully I am able to do that in the very near future."
The Avs are currently on the outside-looking-in when it comes to the playoff race, so we'll have to see if Forsberg can stay healthy and make a difference.
Finally, Alex Tanguay appears to be staying in Calgary. Flames GM Darryl Sutter told reporters today that he won't be trading the winger.
"Alex Tanguay is one of the top left wingers in the National Hockey League an he'll be a pretty good player for us down the stretch," Sutter said.
Bet on hockey, but only if you're not a pussy.
