The NHL trade deadline day is well under way and a number of big moves have already been made.

The biggest so far was announced this morning as the Tampa Bay Lightning sent forward Brad Richards and goalie Johan Holmqvist to the Dallas Stars in return for goalie Mike Smith, forward Jussi Jokinen and forward Jeff Halpern. The key players in the swap are Richards – who won the Conn Smythe Trophy in 2004 as the MVP of the playoffs but has seen his numbers decrease lately – and Smith, who T-Bay hope is the answer to their dreadful goaltending.

Other NHL trade deadline deals, in the order that they were made:

  • Devils send F Cam Janssen to the Blues for D Bryce Salvador
  • Panthers trade 2008 5th round pick to Leafs for F/D Wade Belak
  • Sabres trade D Brian Campbell to Sharks for F Steve Bernier and 2008 1st round pick
  • Caps send 2009 2nd round pick to Canadiens for G Cristobal Huet
  • Avs get D Ruslan Salei from Panthers for D Karlis Skrastins and 3rd round pick
  • Blackhawks send F Tuomo Ruutu to Canes for F Andrew Ladd
  • Blackhawks send F Martin Lapointe to Sens for 2008 6th round pick
