NL Central Notes

Life is pretty stress-free for the Chicago Cubs (95-60, 16.68 units) and their backers with the division title already wrapped up, and it’s showing on the field. Case in point last night, when Jason Marquis became the second pitcher to hit a grand slam against the Mets this season, and the Cubs clinched home-field advantage throughout the NL playoffs with a 9-5 victory.

That win by the Cubs is actually helping the Milwaukee Brewers (85-71, 3.53 units) who are facing a great deal more stress as they continue their quest for the Wild Card spot.

The Brew Crew enters a three-game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates (65-91, -9.71 units) tonight, just one game back of the fading Mets. The Brewers will be looking to win their 10th in a row against the NL Central’s last-place team tonight at Miller Park. Just what this reeling club needs, as they are an NL-worst 5-15 since Sept. 1.

It seems doubtful the Pirates can play spoilers with starter Jeff Karstens (2-6, 4.37) – who has lost six straight starts – on the mound tonight. Then again, the way Milwaukee is playing it would be hard to bet against it happening.
