All of a sudden, no one wants to play the Baltimore Orioles. The O's improved to 27-23 since June 18 – the day Dave Trembley took over as manager – with a 6-3 victory over the New York Yankees in 10 innings in the Bronx on Wednesday.
Miguel Tejada's double broke the tie andAubrey Huff followed with a two-run shot that put the game out of reach. The extra-inning offense came against Mariano Rivera (3-4). Huff is now 6-for-15 (.400) lifetime vs. Rivera.
The Orioles, who beat the Yankees for the second consecutive game, rewarded their backers with a +129 payday (meaning a winning wager of $100 would net a $129 profit). But the bullpen blew a 3-0 lead that cost Erik Bedard a victory. The Yankees' Shelley Duncan hit a three-run homer off Jamie Walker in the bottom of the ninth to send the game into extra frames. It was Duncan's sixth homer of the season. With the loss, the Yankees failed to pick up ground on the Boston Red Sox in the American League East or to pull ahead of the Seattle Mariners in the AL wild-card race. The Yankees are five back of the Red Sox and tied with the Mariners. Both of those teams also lost in a day of upsets in the junior circuit.
Alex Rodriguez was 4-for-4 in the loss.In other early AL action on Wednesday:Tampa Bay 6, Boston 5: Al Reyes fanned Manny Ramirez with two runners on in the ninth, preserving the win for the Devil Rays and earning his 18th save. Tampa Bay backers got a monster payday of +265 as their team beat Daisuke Matsuzaka (13-9) at Fenway Park. The D-Rays got three RBIs from Carlos Pena.
Cleveland 5, Detroit 2: Fausto Carmona (14-7) racked up 10 strikeouts as the Indians pulled back into a tie with the Tigers for the AL Central lead. They also paid -189 at home.
Minnesota 6, Seattle 1: Torii Hunter's grand slam in the ninth put the game away, but his tiebreaking single in the eighth was almost as important as the Twins pulled an upset at Safeco Field. Minnesota paid +121.
Toronto 2, Los Angeles Angels 1: The stunning rise of Shaun Marcum continued as the Blue Jays' righthander won his fifth straight start to improve to 10-4. Marcum, who flirted with a no-hitter in his last outing, gave up one run and four hits through seven innings against L.A. Toronto paid -150.
