Remember when Patrick Roy was loathed in Montreal? I suppose that's a thing of the past. The 43-year-old former goalie had his No. 33 retired by the greatest franchise in the NHL last night.
In front of a sold out Montreal Canadiens crowd last night, the NHL's league leader in career wins and postseason victories was honored for his cotnributions to the game.
In 1986 at 20-years-old Roy led the Canadiens to a Stanley Cup, it was his first of two Conn Smythe trophies he would earn in the red and blue sweater.
But what Roy is remembered more for, perpaps, is the ugly divorce that led to his departure and subsequent arrival and dominance in Colorado.
In an 11-1 massacring in Detroit back in 1995, Roy was pulled after already having allowed an embarrassing nine goals. Fuming as he took the bench, Roy walked past head coach Mario Tremblay and straight to team president Ronald Corey.
Three days later, he was a member of the Avalanche.
On Saturday night it seemed as though that was a thing of the past, as the celebration erased any bitterness that lie between then and now.
Not long after that, however, the Montreal Canadiens fell in a shoot out to the Boston Bruins.
