Looking to rebound from back-to-back losses this weekend, the Chicago Cubs took on the Los Angeles Dodgers Sunday night in front of anybody in LA not at home watching Game 2 of the NBA Finals.
The relatively dull game, which ended with a score of 3-1 Chicago, saw the Cubs win their 40th game of the season, making them just the second team in the Major Leagues to reach the mark (the other being the Boston Red Sox).
Cubs pitcher Jason Marquis led the charge, striking out two and giving up no earned runs in 6.1 innings of solid work.
In the top of the fifth inning, Mark DeRosa singled to right field, driving Alfonso Soriano home to break an early 1-1 tie. Two batters later, Aramis Ramirez doubled to score DeRosa, giving the Cubs the 3-1 lead, an advantage they would hold on to for the remainder of the game.
DeRosa finished the game 3-5 with one homer and two RBIs.
Brad Penny got the start for the Dodgers but continued to struggle, giving up three earned runs in five innings. Heading into the ball game, Penny's ERA hovered over 5.0 and today's performance didn't help.
Elsewhere in baseball a Mark Ellis walk-off grand slam in the 12th inning propelled the Oakland Athletics past the Los Angeles Angels.
