The American Ryder Cup team wasn’t expected to do much this year, not with Europe winning the last three events in a row and Tiger Woods unavailable to play. But the Europeans didn’t bring their A-team to Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville. Team USA won 16 1/2 to 11 1/2, their most lopsided finish at the Ryder Cup since 1981.
Europe captain Nick Faldo has taken heat for choosing Ian Poulter and Paul Casey for this year’s squad over successful veterans Colin Montgomerie and Darren Clarke. Then Faldo shuffled his lineup as Europe fell behind early, benching Sergio Garcia and Lee Westwood for the morning foursomes in Day 2 of the three-day event.
Poulter turned out to be a pretty good choice – he won all three matches he was in. Casey, on the other hand, took a loss and halved his other two matches. Hunter Mahan starred for the U.S. by going undefeated in five appearances.
