Shawne Merriman Has Loose Ligament in Knee

There may not be many "lights out" performances from the San Diego Chargers defense in 2008. All-Pro linebacker Shawne Merriman is nursing a bad knee that doesn't seem to be getting better.

"It's finding out what do I need to fix, what I need to do," Merriman told the Union-Tribune by phone. "If it's left up to me, I want to play football. I can't stand sitting out."

Merriman underwent surgery to repair cartilage damage five months ago but still has pain in the knee. He is being examined by famed Dr. James Andrews, who deals with many sports injuries.
