The NHL dropped the puck on its 2008-09 season with a pair of games abroad.

In Prague, Czech Republic, it was the New York Rangers coming out on top of the Tampa Bay Lightning thanks to a solid performance from first-time Ranger Markus Naslund.

With just under two minutes left on the scoreboard, Naslund broke the 0-0 tie, before Tampa's Martin St. Louis evened things up at one in the third.

Brandon Dubinsky then added a power play goal in the third that would go on to be the difference maker.

Not far away in Stockholm, Sweden it was the Pittsburgh Penguins taking down the Ottawa Senators in overtime.

The game saw ex/current/questioning Maple Leaf Mats Sundin drop the ceremonial first puck and would take overtime to decide an eventual winner. Penguins, 4-3.

When Sault Ste. Marie-born Tyler Kennedy beat Ottawa's Martin Gerber just 40 seconds into the extra frame, it put the Pens on top spoiling Daniel Alfredsson's Swedish homecoming.

Leading the charge with a pair of goals including the winner was Kennedy, while Evgeni Malkin and Rob Scuderi each added one.

For Ottawa it was Jason Spezza, Dany Heatley and Shean Donovan all scoring once.
