The United States Women's soccer team got some awful news on Wednesday night when star striker Abby Wambach suffered a broken left leg in a game against Brazil.
Wambach broke the tibia and fibula in the leg and will undergo surgery on Thursday to have a titanium rod inserted, a team spokesman said. She is expected to be out of action for three months and will miss the Beijing Games, where the United States women begin play on Aug. 6.
The injury occurred when Wambach ran up to a ball at full speed to take a shot from nearly 30 yards. Unfortunately, Brazilian defender Andreia Rosa collided with her, apparently breaking the leg upon impact.
How will the US Women fare without Wambach in the lineup? The Summer Olympics are just around the corner, so check out all of the 2008 Olympic Summer Games Betting available in the Bodog Sportsbook today!
