The American women are headed to the gold medal final for the fourth straight Olympics.
Paced by two goals from Angela Hucles, the U.S. held off a game Japanese squad to advance to the gold medal final via a 4-2 scoreline. The Americans will now face Brazil in the final, the same squad they defeated 2-1 in extra time four years ago in Athens.
The Americans have played in the Olympic gold medal match every time since women's football debuted at the 1996 Atlanta Games, missing the title only in 2000 in Sydney after a loss to Norway.
Hucles' tallies sandwiched a 44th minute goal from Lori Chalupny and the game-winning tally from Heather O'Reilly in the 70th. Shinobu Ohno and Eriko Arakawa replied for the Japanese, who will now take on Germany in the bronze medal match.
