With Flip Saunders turfed as the head coach of the Pistons, widespread speculation is that assistant and former player Michael Curry is ready to take the gig.

According to Stan McNeal of The Sporting News, Detroit GM Joe Dumars had denied teams the chance to interview Curry for their head coaching jobs, notably the Chicago Bulls. This led to speculation that Curry was in line for the job.

"Because refusing to give assistants the OK to interview for head jobs is unusual, we contacted Pistons president Joe Dumars to see if the reports were true.

Essentially, they were. But Dumars stressed that he also had given permission to the Phoenix Suns to talk to another Pistons assistant, Terry Porter. Dumars said he wanted to keep Curry in the organization to groom him, much like the Miami Heat did with Eric Spoelstra, who served as an assistant for 13 years before being named Pat Riley's successor last month. "

It should be an interesting next couple of weeks in Detroit. While all that's going on, don't forget about the Lakers vs. Celtics in the NBA Finals.
