Worst Bone Breaks in Mixed Martial Arts History

Windy Tomomi

Japanese fighter Windy Tomomi suffered a bad ankle break in Costa Rica.

Most of the time, mixed martial arts is an incredibly safe sport. Athletes usually leave the ring with nothing more than a black eye or, at worst, a broken nose. But, every now and then, something awful happens. And sometimes, it’s on TV.

Of course, it's important to keep everything in the right context. MMA is much safer than most sports, even taking freak injuries into account. In fact, more people die each year in fishing-related accidents than any other activity. It turns out that there's something incredibly dangerous about getting drunk in the middle of a lake.

Still, unless you are a serial killer, watching someone get their arm or leg snapped will give you a major case of the heebie-jeebies. There's something awful about hearing bones break or seeing a limb point in a direction that nature never intended. Maybe that's part of why MMA is so exciting. Just like you never know when a NASCAR vehicle will fly off the track and burst into flames, there's always a chance that a fighter will suffer an injury you wish you’d never seen.

Jose "Pele" Landi-Jons vs. Brian Gassaway

A living legend of mixed martial arts, "Pele" has been having a bad run of luck lately. Since moving to Canada last year, the Brazilian has gone 1-2 in the ring and suffered a terrible injury in his latest match. Facing Brian Gassaway at TKO 32: Ultimatum on Feb. 28 in Montreal, Canada, "Pele" threw a hard leg kick and caught Gassaway square on the knee. The force of the blow shattered both bones in Landi-Jons' shin, and as he put his foot back down on the mat, his leg bent beneath him like a rubber band, sending him crashing to the mat in a heap. Now, fans can expect him to be out for a little while, at least.
