Rachel Alexandra became the first filly since 1924 to win the second jewel in US horse racing's Triple Crown, holding off a charge by Kentucky Derby-winner Mine That Bird.

Calvin Borel had piloted +5000 favored Mine That Bird to the Kentucky Derby triumph, but elected to switch to Rachel Alexandra for the one million dollar Preakness when new owner Jess Jackson decided to test her against colts.

This time Mine That Bird's charge fell short by one length.

Rachel Alexandra went off as the +180 favorite in the 13-horse field, and became the first horse to win the Preakness from the number 13 post.

She paid $5.60, $4.60, and $3.60. Mine That Bird returned $6.60 and $4.80, while Musket Man paid $5 to show.

The winner earned US$660,000 from the purse of $1.1 million. The third jewel in the Triple Crown is next! Get your Belmont Stakes odds today.

Filly Rachel Alexandra is the winner of the 134th Preakness Stakes! With the rain beginning to come down right before post time, the handicappers were in a frenzy. The grandstands at Pimlico Racetrack in Baltimore, Maryland, were full of horse enthusiasts as the Win/Place/Show finishers crossed the line, completing the second leg of the Triple Crown. The top three finishers for the 2009 Preakness Stakes are Rachel Alexandra, Mine That Bird and Musket Man.

The second leg of the Triple Crown is over, with the running of the 141st running of the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, June 6th, 2009 at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y. The "Test of the Champion," is the final and most demanding leg of the Triple Crown and is also the longest race in the series, at 1 1/2 miles.

It's not over, kids. There's more horse racing action with the Belmont Stakes approaching in June. If you picked the winning horse, congrats! If yours didn't place, bet on the Belmont Stakes in the Bodog Racebook today.

The condition of the dirt surface at Pimlico racetrack will surely be a factor for Saturday’s Preakness Stakes.

Track conditions will depend on the weather, and Friday’s forecast is a 40% chance of rain, with a high temperature of 76 degrees. Saturday calls for a 40% chance of rain with scattered thundershowers, with the temperature expected to be somewhere in the low 80’s.

If the track is wet it could be a bit laboring, but a little bit of moisture could make it ideal for Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird. He skipped over a wet track at Churchill Downs to beat a similar field. A dry track would better benefit Rachel Alexander, who will likely be coming off the pace in the mid-stages of the race. Dry conditions will also be more advantageous to Pioneerof the Nile; he’s run most of his races so far on synthetic surfaces.

Mine That Bird will be getting odds of 6-1 but will be the third favorite on Saturday morning. Ahead of him is Kentucky Derby runner-up Pioneerof the Nile with odds of 5-1. The morning line favorite is super filly Rachel Alexandra, who has morning line odds of 8-5 to win the second jewel of the Triple Crown.

Also getting the same odds of 6-1 is the Kentucky Derby favorite, Vinery Stable’s Friesan Fire. With the 2009 Preakness Stakes post time approaching, many racing fans are clamoring to get the best Preakness picks. The Bodog Racebook's horse racing experts, Steve Davidowitz, who has published two highly acclaimed books on Thoroughbred racing and is a regular contributor to Daily Racing Form's Simulcast Weekly and DRF Plus, and Dave Turley, who has served as the DRF's Las Vegas correspondent and columnist, break down the Preakness Stakes contenders, offering their advice on the best way to make some cash with 2009 Preakness betting.

While Davidowitz picks Pioneerof the Nile to win the Preakness, Turley has Mine That Bird as his number one pick. Davidowitz has Papa Clem to place and Rachel Alexandra to show. On the other hand, Turley has Pioneerof the Nile to place and Musket Man to show.
With the post positions drawn, the Preakness Stakes, the second and shortest leg of the Triple Crown, sees its 134th running on Saturday, May 16 at Pimlico Race Course. The Bodog Racebook has all your Preakness Stakes odds but before you wager on your favorite 3-year-old Thoroughbreds, be sure you read up on your Preakness Stakes contenders.

The shocking Kentucky Derby champ Mine That Bird will face the Preakness early favorite, Rachel Alexandra. The filly will run with Cavin Borel, Mine That Bird's winning jockey at the Kentucky Derby. Rachel Alexandra was recently purchased by Jess Jackson of Stonestreet Stables and trained by Steve Asmussen. Despite the fact that Rachel Alexandra has never raced against colts, many oddsmakers now have her as the Preakness favorite.

Jockey Mike Smith will be aboard Mine That Bird. Though Mine That Bird will be without his winning jockey Calvin Borel, he could still have what it takes to take on the Kentucky Oaks-winning filly.

Mine That Bird will start inside from post 2, while Rachel Alexandra will run from the outside in the No. 13 spot. Who will take home the second jewel of the Triple Crown? Will it be Mine That Bird or Rachel Alexandra? Or Friesan Fire, Musket Man or Papa Clem?
The 2009 Preakness Stakes will go down this coming Saturday, 4:30 p.m. at Pimlico Racetrack and the post positions have been drawn! And now, there are more ways to win in the Bodog Racebook. Right now, Bodog is offering a $50 match bonus to each new customer who will sign up and deposit $50 between now and May 16th 2009. Just deposit $50 get your $50 match bonus.

Here is the post position order for the 2009 Preakness Stakes:

Post Position No. 1: Big Drama – Big Drama ran from the No. 6 sport during the Swale Stakes, where he earned a second place finish. Big Drama earned a first place win at Boyd Gaming's Delta Jackpot Stakes from post position no. 5.

Post Position No. 2: Mine That Bird – This longshot Kentucky Derby winner ran from the starting spot in the Derby run.

Post Position No. 3: Musket Man – Musket Man has a habit of drawing inside spots, but has done pretty well with his bad hand, earning a respectable 3rd place at the Kentucky Derby.

Post Position No. 4: Luv Guv – This horse has proven he is comfortable with inside positions.

Post Position No. 5: Friesan Fire – He came in first despite drawing the outside spot on the post positions in the Louisiana Derby.

Post Position No. 6: Terrain – Terrain also drew the no. 4 position at the Louisiana Derby and finished third. Perhaps he'll eat a few extra Cheerios on Preakness day and move up a couple spots?

Post Position No. 7: Papa Clem – The Arkansas Derby winner started from an inside post position and also drew the number seven position in the Derby, where he finished fourth.

Post Position No. 8: General Quarters – This horse did well with a No. 8 post position at the Blue Grass Stakes, taking the win. He also won the Sam F. Davis from post position 2, but failed to place at the Kentucky Derby from a middle position.

Post Position No. 9: Pioneerof the Nile – One of the Kentucky Derby favorites, Pioneerof the Nile came in 2nd place at the Kentucky Derby.

Post Position No. 10: Flying Private – This horse drew the no. 20 post position at the Kentucky Derby, which wasn't a good pick for him as he came in last. Perhaps he'll fair better from the no. 10 position.

Post Position No. 11: Take The Points – Earned a respectable 4th place at the Santa Anita Derby despite drawing an outside positions.

Post Position No. 12: Tone It Down – An inside post position is probably better for this horse, so we'll see how he handles post no. 12 in the Preakness.

Post Position No. 13: Rachel Alexandra – The Kentucky Oaks' winner is the favorite to win. Now this filly eyes the Preakness.

So there you have it. Now that the post positions have been drawn, you should be able to make better wagers. Be sure to get all your 2009 Preakness odds in the Bodog Racebook now!
