Tonight in Arizona, the Cardinals will host Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers in both team's third preseason game.

The Packers are 2-0 and seem to have their offense firing on all cylinders right now, while Kurt Warner, Anquan Boldin, and Larry Fitzgerald and the rest of the Cardinals offense has looked anything but sharp coming in at 0-2.

The Cardinals are currently listed as 3.5-point home favorites.

The Packers tore apart the Buffalo Bills at home last week as Rodgers tossed a pair of touchdowns, completing 8-of-9 passes for 98 yards overall.

In a loss to the Chargers last week, the Cards offense turned the ball over twice and failed to put seven points on the board in all five of their red zone appearances.

Preseason games don’t mean much, but this is the spot where Arizona must come through in order to gain some confidence for the regular season.

On Saturday, the San Diego Chargers will travel to Arizona to take on the Cardinals in Week 2 of preseason games.

Arizona QB Matt Leinart strengthened his hold on the No. 2 job with a steady performance in the preseason opener. He finished 8-of-14 for 83 yards in a 20-10 loss to the Steelers. Expect Leinart to get a lot more touches on Saturday.

Chargers rookie outside linebacker Larry English is expected to be sidelined for this one. English, the team's first-round draft pick, was unable to work in team drills again on Wednesday due to a balky left hamstring that has cost him two weeks of training camp, including the exhibition opener.

Cardinals rookie Michael Ray Garvin will undergo arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. The Cardinals expect Garvin to be out a week or two.

There is quite the crop of rookies entering the NFL this season that have the potential to bust out. None are bigger than Chris Wells, who is pegged as the early favorite for AP Offensive Rookie of the Year.

The Arizona RB is listed at +350, ahead of Donald Brown (+500) of the Colts and Michael Crabtree (+500) of the 49ers.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt is aiming for Wells to return this week from an ankle injury and play against the Chargers.

Wells' showing in the final three preseason games will go a long way toward determining his early-season role and how much of an impact he will have.

Also don't be surprised if Wells gets a look as a kickoff returner in the preseason. At least that is what the Cardinals' official site is saying.

Getting healthy and staying that way will be the greatest factor in Beanie Wells taking the title as AP Offensive Rookie of the Year.

The Arizona Cardinals came close to winning the Super Bowl last season vs. the Pittsburgh Steelers. Now, they will get a chance to seek their revenge in Week 1 of the NFL preseason, as they meet the Steelers at Heinz Field.

Bodog has the line set at -3 for the Super Bowl champions as Thursday's game approaches.

Of course some key players will be missing from this matchup – it will be all about the second string squads. This game means very little to the Steelers since no matter what happens, they are still the uncontested Super Bowl champs until the next big game.

Now that the Cards have released RB Edgerrin James and lost DE Antonio Smith to free agency, it will be interesting to see first-round draft pick Beanie Wells splits RB duties with second-year back Tim Hightower.

Can the Cards get some form of payback on Thursday?

Training camp gets started today for the Arizona Cardinals as players start to report. There is a conditioning test tomorrow and the first practice is July 31.

Just seems like yesterday that we were watching the Cardinals almost upset the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Super Bowl.

On Saturday, Aug. 8, the Cardinals will host a “Red and White” practice that includes an autograph session and live goal-line session.

The team will also have two night practices, on Aug. 5 and Aug. 18. Camp breaks on Aug. 20.

The Cardinals achieved most of their offseason goals. They re-signed two key veterans, quarterback Kurt Warner and strong safety Adrian Wilson, but failed to reach a long-term deal with linebacker Karlos Dansby, their franchise player.

They have also signed six of their eight draft picks, with the top two still unsigned.

The Cards are listed at +2600 to win the Super Bowl.

Last week here on Bodog Beat, I broke down the New York Jets' first four games and speculated they would go 0-4 with a very tough opening month and the news that star linebacker Calvin Pace had been suspended that long.

Well, since the NFL season is only two months away, I thought I would try and break down every team's full schedule and get a feel for how that club might finish – obviously, assuming no major injuries. Doing four of these each week should get us right to opening weekend in the NFL. Hey, every fan looks at their team's schedule when it's first released and blurts out: 10-6 or the like. I certainly do!

While Bodog hasn't yet released the NFL over/under win totals, they should be out soon. For the time being, I will speculate what that number will be, as well as give Bodog's conference and Super Bowl title odds. I will go alphabetically by city, meaning we start with the NFC champion Arizona Cardinals.

Schedule:
Sept. 13: vs. San Francisco 49ers, 4:15 p.m.
Sept. 20: at Jacksonville Jaguars, 1 p.m.
Sept. 27: vs. Indianapolis Colts, 8:20 p.m.
Week 4: Bye
Oct. 11: vs. Houston Texans, 4:15 p.m.
Oct. 18: at Seattle Seahawks, 4:05 p.m.
Oct. 25: at New York Giants, 8:20 p.m.
Nov. 1: vs. Carolina Panthers, 4:15 p.m.
Nov. 8 at Chicago Bears, 1 p.m.
Nov. 15 vs. Seattle Seahawks, 4:15 p.m.
Nov. 22 at St. Louis Rams, 4:05 p.m.
Nov. 29 at Tennessee Titans, 1 p.m.
Dec. 6 vs. Minnesota Vikings, 4:15 p.m.
Dec. 14 at San Francisco 49ers, 8:30 p.m.
Dec. 20 at Detroit Lions, 1 p.m.
Dec. 27 vs. St. Louis Rams, 4:05 p.m.
Jan. 3 vs. Green Bay Packers, 4:15 p.m.

Strength of schedule: 27th (opponents combined to go 113-143, .441, in 2008)
Projected record: 8-8
Projected Bodog over/under total: 8 ½
Bodog odds to win NFC: 10/1
Bodog odds to win Super Bowl XLIV: 25/1
I'm guessing most experts are going to think the Arizona was a fluke in 2008, and this team only did finish 9-7 before three improbable wins in the playoffs and a near-miracle upset of the Steelers in the Super Bowl.

The good news is that QB Kurt Warner did come back, and it appears receiver Anquan Boldin will be in the desert for one more season despite not getting a new deal or his wish for a trade. The Cards do need to figure out who their starting running back will be with Edgerrin James now gone. Either rookie Chris "Beanie" Wells or Tim Hightower figures to start, although they will no doubt split carries.

Arizona has the benefit of playing in the weak NFC West, so that should be good for at least four wins in 2009 — the Cards were *6-0 in the division last year. Let's say they sweep the three home division games and win at St. Louis. The Cards should also be able to beat Houston, Carolina and Green Bay in Glendale. That gets us to seven victories.

I only see one more good chance of a road win, and that's at Detroit (although the Cards struggled big time in the Eastern time zone last year before crushing Carolina in the playoffs). That's an 8-8 record. Certainly I don't forecast Arizona winning at the Giants, Bears or Titans, or beating the Colts in the desert. That means a winning record probably comes down to games at Jacksonville and home to Minnesota. I expect losses in both of those, however – again, barring the unforeseen injury, etc.

Since the 2000 Super Bowl, the runner-up in the big game has missed the playoffs the following season every year but in 2006, when the Seahawks made it back after losing to Pittsburgh. Sound familiar? I think Arizona also gets back, but by default of playing in a terrible division.

Ryan Ludwick and Rick Ankiel are expected to play tonight when the St. Louis Cardinals open a three-game set at AT&T Park against the resurgent San Francisco Giants.

St. Louis, winner of two in a row and seven of nine, took a one-game lead in the division over Milwaukee with Wednesday's 3-2 victory against the Brewers. The Cardinals' pitching has been outstanding during this nine-game stretch, posting an 0.88 ERA.

St. Louis is looking for a spark from its offense, but that could be difficult as it faces Matt Cain in the series opener. Cain is 3-0 with a 1.61 ERA in his last four starts.

The Giants look for their season-best fifth straight victory at home after winning all three against Atlanta.

Joel Pineiro has been moved up a day in the rotation to start for the Cards. He is 0-2 with an 8.10 ERA in two career starts against San Francisco.
Without the injured Brian McCann and Garret Anderson in the lineup to protect Chipper Jones, who's batting .333 this season and is 3-for-5 against scheduled starter Adam Wainwright, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa seems certain to continue taking the bat out of the slugger's hands.

Jones walked five times in the first two games of the series and in all four plate appearances Tuesday. One of those walks came in the eighth inning, and Jones came around to score the go-ahead run on Matt Diaz's two-run single in Atlanta's 2-1 victory.

While Atlanta (-115 favorites) tries to get on track offensively after scoring two runs in each of its last three games, it hopes Javier Vazquez continues his surprising early season success tonight.

Vazquez is 2-6 with a 4.01 ERA in nine starts against the Cardinals, last facing them in 2006. For all your MLB betting needs, be sure to check out the Bodog Sportsbook.

On Wednesday Chris Duncan and Ryan Ludwick extended streaks with multi-hit performances, and Yadier Molina went 3-for-3, helping the Cards win 12-7 over Arizona.

Duncan's nine-game streak is tied for the best in the majors, and Ludwick has a hit in all seven of his games. Then there's reigning NL MVP Albert Pujols, among the league leaders with 13 RBIs and 11 runs scored while hitting .342.

Despite losing four of six last season at Wrigley, St. Louis scored 12 runs in each win.

That could mean a tough first start for the Cubs' Sean Marshall. He is 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA in his career against the Cardinals and took a win in his only start last season against St. Louis on July 6.
The Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals gave us four quarters of solid football, but it was the final quarter of the game that kept us all on the edge of our seats (right?). No doubt history was made on a number of counts today at Raymond James Stadium as Steelers linebacker James Harrison intercepted the ball and ran 100 yards for the touchdown…but the win at the end of it all gave the Steelers its sixth Super Bowl win — the most by any NFL team in Super Bowl history.

Holy smokers what a game.
