NCAA Basketball Picks: Baylor at No. 24 Texas

Their recovery hit the skids over a month ago when the defense went kaput and the Bears won just one of nine games at a perfectly awful 0-9 ATS. But Baylor stopped the madness on Saturday with a 75-57 win over Colorado (+14.5) to keep hope alive for a trip to the NIT. Now the Bears need a miracle: a win Monday night in Austin against the Texas Longhorns (19-9 SU, 10-15 ATS).

Not that this has been the greatest season in Longhorns history. They got back into the AP rankings after winning four of five games, but lost 68-59 at Oklahoma State (-1) on Saturday. Texas is 2-7 ATS since the last time these two teams met back on Jan. 27; the ‘Horns won that matchup 78-72 as 1.5-point road dogs.

A victory would go a long way toward erasing memories of a crushing 92-91 overtime defeat in Norman a year ago. Down three with seconds remaining, Oklahoma converted a rare four-point play to take the lead. Baylor’s Curtis Jerrells had the chance to win the game, or at least send it to a second overtime, but missed two free throws with one second remaining.

Don't expect that same kind of drama again this weekend. The Sooners have won 28 straight meetings against Baylor and have a 33-5 advantage in the series. Oklahoma has won the last 16 meetings in Norman, where they are 11-0 this season at the Lloyd Noble Center.

But there can be no more mistakes, which means the Baylor Bears (3-6 SU, 5-3 ATS) must be taken seriously on Saturday, even as 28-point road dogs.

The ‘Horns are 10-0 SU and 6-4 ATS versus Baylor since 1998. However, the Bears have improved in their first season under coach Art Briles, who spent three years on Mike Leach’s staff at Texas Tech. Baylor has covered three of its last four games and nearly beat Missouri (-21) last week before falling 31-28.

The Longhorns have dropped the cash in their past two outings since starting the 2008 campaign at 7-0 ATS. But Texas has drawn most of the action in this matchup after opening Tuesday night as 26.5-point faves. Kickoff in Austin is at noon Eastern.

Purdue Pounds Baylor, Will Face Xavier in NCAA Second Round

Although they’re a young squad, the Purdue Boilermakers looked like March Madness veterans in their opening round game against the Baylor Bears.

With two freshman and two sophomores in the starting lineup, Purdue showed why other teams should fear their defense, forcing six turnovers and holding the high-scoring Bears to 32 percent from the field in the first half.

Although the Bears were able to marginally improve their shooting in the second half, they couldn’t stop E’Twaun Moore and his 16 points and seven rebounds.

The Boilermakers are showing they can play tough in the tourney without the support of Gene Keady and his bad hairpiece trolling the sidelines. This is Matt Painter’s second appearance in the tournament as head coach. His team lost in the second round last season.

The Boilermakers, who’ve done a good job of proving we’re total idiots, now face Xavier in the second round.
