French resident Benjamin Boukpeti – born to a Tologlese father – captured bronze in the white water kayak event today, stunning the field as the first non-European male kayaker to win an Olympic slalom medal. Boukpeti, 27, had only been to Togo once (as a child) and was ranked 56th in the world in his sport heading into today's race.

While the country was thrilled with the result, nobody really knew who Boukpeti was before his historic race. "I've never heard of this person, but having a compatriot win a medal at the Olympic Games is a real honour for us," said Yves Gbetounou, a high school science student in the capital Lome.
