Togo, a narrow country in West Africa bordering Ghana, Benin and Burkina Faso, does not have much of an Olympic history. Heading into the 2008 Games in Beijing, Togo had never medaled.

Until today, that is.

French resident Benjamin Boukpeti – born to a Tologlese father – captured bronze in the white water kayak event today, stunning the field as the first non-European male kayaker to win an Olympic slalom medal. Boukpeti, 27, had only been to Togo once (as a child) and was ranked 56th in the world in his sport heading into today's race.

While the country was thrilled with the result, nobody really knew who Boukpeti was before his historic race. "I've never heard of this person, but having a compatriot win a medal at the Olympic Games is a real honour for us," said Yves Gbetounou, a high school science student in the capital Lome.

The exciting and unpredictable results keep coming in from Beijing. Think you can capitalize on an upset like Boukpeti's? Then head on over to the Bodog Sportsbook for the most up-to-date 2008 Olympic Summer Games Betting!
