The Dominator will dominate no longer.

That's the word coming out of Detroit this afternoon as Dominik Hasek – arguably the greatest goaltender of the modern era – will not be back for a 17th season in the National Hockey League. While still fit to play at age 43, Hasek said he lacked the motivation to continue.

"I don't feel today that I'm ready to compete on the highest level," Hasek said during a news conference at Joe Louis Arena. "Not because of the physical things, but because I need motivation every day. … Right now I don't feel it's there, and I don't want to disappoint anybody."

Hasek ranks 10th in NHL history in wins, ninth in goals against average, 18th in games and is tied for sixth in shutouts.

He won 65 playoff games — including 16 in 2002 when he won his first Stanley Cup with Detroit — and gave up an average of just two goals in the postseason.

While hockey is cooling out for the summer, there are still great Sports Betting Odds in the Bodog Sportsbook!

Dominik Hasek usually backstops the Detroit Red Wings out of trouble. On Friday night, his rustiness cost them a victory. The Dominator, who hadn’t played in more than two weeks because of a hip injury, allowed a goal on the first shot he faced as the San Jose Sharks edged the Red Wings, 3-2, in Motown.

Joe Pavelski scored 1:40 into the game and Devin Setoguchi notched the first of his two goals 52 seconds into the second period for the underdog Sharks. San Jose paid +125 on the puckline (meaning a winning hockey bet of $100 would net $125). The over/under was a push.

Detroit fell to 1-8-2 in its last 11 games but remained atop the NHL standings with 90 points. Henrik Zetterberg scored his 36th goal for the Red Wings and Hasek finished with 19 saves.

Evgeni Nabokov stopped 20 shots as the Sharks won their fourth game in a row.

In other NHL action on Friday:

Montreal 6, Buffalo 2: Tomas Plekanec had a hat trick and Alexei Kovalev recorded four assists for the Canadiens, who paid +110 in Buffalo.

Washington 4, New Jersey 0: The Capitals stunned the Devils as Cristobal Huet made 18 saves for the shutout in his first game since being acquired by Montreal on Tuesday. Washington was a +135 underdog.
