As the son of a three-time NBA champion the Duke guard knows a little bit about mystique, and there's no question the Blue Devils have it.

But even with Duke's stature, it's Villanova that has the actual NCAA tournament experience.

The Wildcats, the No. 3 seed in the East, are back in the regional semifinals for the fourth time in five years, though they haven't reached the Final Four since 1985.

Florida State has been knocking on the door of the NCAA Tournament for most of Leonard Hamilton’s five years as head coach. The ‘Noles are just about locked in now after beating Clemson 73-66 as 1-point road dogs. They might be a bit overvalued at No. 24 in the polls; FSU is all defense and no offense, a classic “under” combination at 14-9 on the season.

Duke plays some serious D as well. The under is 17-10 this year, not to mention a winner in nine of the last 10 matchups between the Blue Devils and the Seminoles.

Guard play is critical for Duke and, whether Nolan Smith is out after absorbing the brunt of a solid screen in the Maryland win, the Devils have to get golden play from their perimeter rotation.

Kyle Singler canned two 3-pointers against Maryland, giving him at least one 3-point basket in five consecutive games for Duke.

Tech still has a chance to make the NCAA Tournament and will likely need another regular season win and probably a victory in the ACC tournament to do so.

An upset of Duke might convince the selection committee of its tournament worthiness.

Good thing for the Blue Devils that they’re taking a break from the ACC grind and playing their annual matchup with the St. John’s Red Storm (12-13 SU, 7-11-1 ATS) Thursday night at Madison Square Garden. The Red Storm have dropped five straight to Duke – with the under getting paid each time – and failed to cover in both 2007 (+7.5 at MSG) and 2008 (+23 at Cameron Indoor). They have also lost nine straight at home to Duke, and had dropped 22 in a row overall in the series before a 78-74 victory in last season's ACC Tournament semifinals. Gerald Henderson led Duke in scoring for the sixth time in the last seven games on Sunday and is averaging 20.4 points during those games. Henderson has failed to score in double figures in three of his four career games versus Clemson

Duke's defense is limiting opponents to 54.6 points per game and 37.3 percent shooting in conference play.

Maryland has played only two true road games this season, losing both at Miami and at Florida State last weekend. The Terps were swept by Duke last season and the Blue Devils are a perfect 11-0 at home so far this year.

A victory for the Blue Devils likely would set up a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup next week at Wake Forest. If Duke is already looking ahead to that possible matchup, Maryland could sneak up and surprise them today. Get all your NCAA odds in the Bodog Sportsbook.

One of the main problems with Sidney Lowe’s Wolfpack team is ball-handling. N.C. State is coughing up the ball on 21.2 percent of possessions, a rate that’s even more alarming facing a Duke defense that forces a turnover on 24.2 percent of opponent’s plays. Lowe’s been happy with his team defense, but is otherwise having some trouble coming up with a consistent lineup.

Duke’s defense has been outstanding this season – No. 2 in Division I in efficiency, with the under cashing in five out of the last six games to improve to 10-5-1. Get college basketball odds with Bodog now.

Duke's defense has been its strength all season, as it leads the ACC in scoring defense and is fifth in field goal defense. They've held their last four opponents to an average of 55.0 points on 35.5 percent shooting, including 18.6 percent from 3-point range.

To counter that, the Yellow Jackets have not exactly been burning it up on offense lately. The Jackets shot just 39.1 percent in their last two games, and turned the ball over 28 times in Saturday's 68-61 loss at Maryland.

The Blue Devils have won three straight games over the Yellow Jackets as well as 23 of the last 25 meetings overall.

Right behind the Blue Devils at 82.3 points a contest is Davidson, which of course is led by the explosive Curry.

The Blue Devils have won 66 straight at home against non-conference opponents since Feb. 26, 2000.

This year was supposed to be the one Duke reasserted itself in the NCAA Tournament. After getting upset by Virginia Commonwealth in the first round last year, the Blue Devils promised a better showing and were expected to go deep.

Instead, the No. 2 seed in the West Region barely escaped its opening-round game with a one-point win over No. 15 Belmont then bowed out Saturday to No. 7 West Virginia in the second round.

The Mountaineers clinched the first Sweet 16 spot in the 2008 March Madness field with a come-from-behind 73-67 victory over Mike Krzyzewski’s team in the nation’s capital.

Joe Alexander had 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead West Virginia, and Joe Mazzulla scored 13 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. The Mountaineers trailed by five at the half before pouring it on after intermission. The undersized Blue Devils couldn’t find an answer for West Virginia’s creative offense.

The underdog Mountaineers beat the point spread, which favored Duke by 4.5.

Duke won the preseason Maui Invitational, usually a harbinger of good things to come. The last three winners of that tournament went on to the Final Four, but the Blue Devils wilted down the stretch, finishing 6-4 prior to the Big Dance.

"Going into the tournament this year, I think we're a lot deeper. Everyone is confident of their abilities and how they can contribute to help the team," guard DeMarcus Nelson told reporters on Wednesday. "It's a night-and-day difference, how we feel physically and emotionally going into the tournament this year and last. … By the time we stepped into the tournament, we pretty much were dead."
