Top ranked 170-pound fighter Jake Shields (20-4-1) has pulled out of his scheduled EliteXC world welterweight title fight against Drew Fickett (32-5-0).

According to Proelite.com, Shields is unable to fight due to an injury.

The two were scheduled to clash on March 29 in San Jose, Calif. on the undercard of Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Cung Le.

Shields was the -500 favorite in the Bodog Sportsbook with Fickett as the +300 underdog.

The injury is the latest in a series of setbacks suffered by Strikeforce matchmakers. Last week, it was announced that Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos (16-11-0) would not be able to fight Joey "Dreamsmasher" Villasenor (24-6-0) due to visa problems.

The main event for the night remains untouched, as Strikeforce champion Frank Shamrock (24-8-1) fights undefeated challenger Cung Le (5-0-0)

Interim UFC heavyweight champ Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira would destroy Elite XC fighter Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson. (MMAweekly.com Photo / AP Images)

A little while back, during a conference call to promote the fight between Kimbo Slice and David "Tank" Abbott, Elite XC president Gary Shaw went on a rant about the UFC and its president Dana White.

Essentially, he called White an egomaniacal jackass and said that, contrary to popular opinion, the UFC doesn't have all the best fighters in the world. In fact, he even said that he'd be willing to match his best guys from Elite XC against White's best fighters on any day of the week. He also added that until UFC champions are allowed to fight outside of the octagon, they'll be nothing more than "club champs."

Instead of picking up the gauntlet and accepting the challenge, White responded by calling Shaw "[an expletive] loser" on Yahoo! Sports, proving once again that the UFC is not interested in doing co-promotions and also, that White cannot speak three words without one of them being an expletive.

Still, the question remains: Who has the better fighters? The Ultimate Fighting Championship or Elite Xtreme Combat?

Antonio "Minotauro" Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson

Currently, the UFC heavyweight champion is Randy "The Natural" Couture, but since he and White are locked in a bitter court battle, it's probably fair to exclude "The Natural" from the octagon roster. Kimbo is hands down the biggest name in the Elite XC heavyweight division, so it seems only fair to match him against UFC interim champ Nogueira.

How would a match between "Minotauro" and Kimbo end? Quickly. Slice might have some street smarts and better than average boxing ability, but Nogueira is the total package. He has a black belt in jiu-jitsu and trains each year with the Cuban National Boxing Team. With a list of victims that includes Tim Sylvia, Josh Barnett and Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, the UFC champ has taken out the best in the world, and Kimbo is still very green at just 2-0 in MMA.

The Elite XC marketing team has done an incredible job convincing millions of fans that Slice is the toughest guy in mixed martial arts, but the reality is that Nogueira would beat him by submission in the first round.

On Saturday, Feb. 16 in Miami, Fla., it took Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson (2-0-0) just 43 seconds to knock out David "Tank" Abbott (9-14-0) in the main event of EliteXC: Street Certified.

From the opening bell, both fighters went to war immediately, clashing toe-to-toe. After eating a hard shot from his opponent, Abbott tried to take his opponent to the mat, but his takedown attempt was thwarted, as Slice spun away. Midway through the fight, the referee intervened and warned Kimbo for punching Abbott in the back of the head. Quickly the match was restarted and, again, Kimbo landed the harder shots. After another failed takedown attempt, Abbott took a crushing punch on the jaw and fell face-first to the canvas.

“I wanted him to get up, I wanted to bang,’’ Kimbo said later. “I had to push him off because we were too close. Then I just knocked him down. It was great fighting in front of the hometown fans. I’d be lying if I told you they didn’t jack me up. I have a lot of respect for Tank. This was one of my dream fights, along with Mike Tyson. But I am ready to fight anybody and ready to fight again really soon."

Other winners were Antonio Silva (10-1-0), UFC veteran Scott Smith (13-5-0) and Bodog Fight veteran Yves Edwards (33-13-1) who won with an incredible flying knee knockout.

Kimbo Slice vs. Tank Abbott. (MMAweekly.com photo)

Since plucking him from the ashes of the Cage Fury Fighting Championships, which collapsed under financial ruin, EliteXC has invested mountains of cash into marketing Kevin Ferguson (1-0-0)

With millions of people downloading videos of his street fights off the Internet, "Kimbo Slice" was already a household name among fight fans when EliteXC picked him up. Now, after appearing nationwide on billboards and television shows, including Jimmy Kimmel Live, he's one of the most talked-about fighters in mixed martial arts – and certainly the most famous on the EliteXC payroll.

After everything they've done to build his already larger-than-life image, it's safe to say that EliteXC has a considerable interest in seeing “Kimbo” defeat fellow street-fighting legend David "Tank" Abbott (9-13-0)on Saturday, Feb. 16 at EliteXC: Street Certified. Will "Kimbo” win? It seems likely, for a lot of different reasons.

You don't spend millions of dollars marketing a fighter and then send him into battle unless you're relatively sure he's going to come out victorious. At the same time, you can't keep putting your golden boy against tomato cans forever without damaging his credibility. What you want is someone with a big name but not much to back it up, a fighter whose bark is worse than their bite.

Considering the marketability of his name and his faltering record, is anyone surprised that EliteXC matchmakers called "Tank"? Sure, he and "Kimbo" were scheduled to throw down at CFFC before it fell apart, but beyond that history, there's a chemistry there that favors "Kimbo" in a big way.

"I feel I have come a long way in a short time in my Street to Elite transition," he said at a recent press conference. "There is a big difference in just fighting some dude and what goes on in Mixed Martial Arts."

Facing Abbott on Saturday night, Slice guarantees that one of them is going to get knocked out.

"For sure, someone is going down and maybe getting knocked out, and that someone is not going to be me," he explained. "The only thing I want to do is win, but the main thing is I want to break something along the way; a chin or jaw, rib, arm, some skin, anything."
