The Hoyas have a talented frontcourt in center Greg Monroe and forward DaJuan Summers, but Villanova’s guards will test the quickness of their Hoya counterparts.

Villanova represents the Hoyas’ last chance at a marquee win before the Big East tourney. For this to happen Monroe will have to improve on his third-lowest rebounding total of the Big East season against Louisville, when he had five. The Golden Eagles have five games remaining in the regular season, all of which except the first are against ranked teams. After traveling to Washington to face the Georgetown Hoyas on Saturday, it closes the season with UConn, Louisville, Pitt, and Syracuse.

Georgetown is reeling, but the Hoyas have shown the ability to beat top teams. They have quickness on the perimeter and a strong presence underneath in freshman Greg Monroe. Marquette has struggled defensively recently, but rebounded with a good effort against St. John’s on Feb. 14.

The Hoyas are expected to stop the bleeding since the Scarlet Knights are 1-8 in the conference and just 10-12 overall.

But backers know the same thing was said last week when the Hoyas went to Seton Hall, which was winless in the Big East until a 65-60 victory over Georgetown.

Rutgers is coming off a 75-56 victory over DePaul and at least has moved out of the Big East basement. The home team is 9-4-1 ATS in the last 14 meetings and the Hoyas are 5-1 ATS in their last six Tuesday night games. College basketball betting? You betcha! Kyle McAlarney has also had no success against the Hoyas. He's shot 22.7 percent from the floor in three games versus Georgetown, averaging 4.0 points.

Georgetown is 10-0 when it holds its opponent below 45.0 percent from the field, and 0-2 when it doesn't.

The Hoyas have won their last two road games against ranked opponents after losing their previous 11.

Two was not a kind number in the NCAA Tournament Sunday. Moments after Texas, the second seed in the South Region, survived against Miami, No. 2 Tennessee was forced into overtime against No. 7 Butler in the East and No. 2 Georgetown lost a lead to No. 10 Davidson in the Midwest. Tennessee escaped with a 76-71 win in Birmingham, Ala., but Georgetown flamed out as Davidson’s Stephen Curry blew up again for 30 points in a 74-70 victory in Raleigh, N.C. The Volunteers got four free throws in the final 13.6 seconds of overtime from JaJuan Smith to advance to the Sweet 16. Tennessee’s success at the free-throw line helped their bettors get their money back. The March Madness point spread was five and the betting result was a push.Wayne Chism dominated inside with 16 points and helped limit the Bulldogs’ talented freshman Matt Howard to just four points. Butler got a sterling effort from veteran guards A.J Graves (21 points) and Mike Green (15), but it wasn’t enough to push them into the NCAA Tournament’s second weekend. Meanwhile, underdog Davidson emerged as a legitimate Final Four threat by rallying from a 17-point deficit to upset the Hoyas. Curry, who had only five points in the first half, exploded for 25 after intermission and now has 70 points in his two games of the tournament. Curry hit the go-ahead three-pointer and nailed five of six free throws down the stretch to stagger Georgetown. Fellow guard Jason Richards had 20 points for Davidson, which beat the point spread of five and advanced to face No. 3 Wisconsin in Detroit next week. In a West Region game:No. 12 Western Kentucky 73, No. 13 San Diego 64: The Hilltoppers moved on to face No. 1 UCLA next week when Courtney Lee scored 29 points. Western Kentucky, which was favored by five, nearly blew a 15-point lead but recovered to hold off the Toreros in Tampa, Fla. Yep, the wife and kid are out of the house and there is no doubt it’s madness. Color me a college kid and pass me another beverage, I love NCAA basketball!

Highly-touted Georgetown entered this year’s tournament as a No. 2 seed, same as it did last season. The Hoyas opened the championship campaign in Raleigh, same as they did last season. Three for three with the opening round win over UMBC.

Although UMBC cut the lead to 10 early in the second half, John Thompson III’s team advanced easily. Recovering from watching the game, on the other hand, might not be so easy.

Patrick Ewing Jr. was 5-5 from the field but Georgetown showed some chinks in the armor against a lesser team, only going 6-14 from the charity stripe.

Yet the Hoyas covered the -17 spread and Roy Hibbert, who led the Hoyas with 13.6 points and 6.5 rebounds per game this season finished with 13 points and 7 rebounds.

Georgetown is now 18-1 in its opening round games and moves on to face Stephen Curry and the upstart Davidson Wildcats in the second round.

March Madness has begun. Not officially, but the stakes in the nation’s capital Saturday afternoon was a prelude of things to come in the weeks ahead.

The top two teams in the Big East met in a showdown for the conference regular-season crown. The Georgetown Hoyas proved an old sports adage that a champion is always difficult to dethrone. A three-pointer by DaJuan Summers lifted the No. 11 Hoyas to a 55-52 victory over No. 12 Louisville as Georgetown won back-to-back conference championships for the first time in school history.

Summers’ winning shot came with 40 seconds to play. However, the margin of victory wasn’t enough for the Hoyas’ to cover the point spread, which was 3.5.

The loss ended Louisville’s nine-game winning streak. The Cardinals, who were only 4-for-18 on three-point attempts, will enter next week’s Big East tournament as the No. 2 seed.

In other college basketball action on Saturday afternoon:

No. 2 Memphis 94, UAB 56: Joey Dorsey had a double-double (16 points, 12 rebounds) as the Tigers closed out their dominating Conference-USA schedule with a rout at home. Memphis easily covered the 14.5-point spread.

USC 77, No. 7 Stanford 64: O.J. Mayo had 25 points to lead the Trojans to a home upset of the Cardinal. Taj Gibson added 20 points and 11 boards as underdog USC beat the 1.5-point spread in the Pac-10 contest.

Desperate for a win, the Syracuse Orange relied on the home crowd to contribute. More than 31,000 showed up at the Carrier Dome to do just that. The raucous atmosphere fueled the Orange and rattled the No. 8 Georgetown Hoyas in a Big East matchup of arch-rivals.

Using a 24-8 first-half run to build a 20-point lead Syracuse toppled the Hoyas, 77-70, on Saturday afternoon. The victory was the first by the Orange over a ranked team since last season. At 17-9, the Orange have slim hopes of making the NCAA Tournament but a win over Georgetown will certainly help their cause.

Paul Harris led the way with 22 points while freshmen Donte Greene (18) and Jonny Flynn (17) also had big games as Syracuse rebounded from an embarrassing loss to South Florida on Wednesday.

The underdog Orange beat the point spread, which favored the Hoyas by 3.5.

In other notable Top 25 games on Saturday:

No. 3 Kansas 69, Colorado 45: Mario Chalmers had 13 points and Darnell Jackson had 12 as the Jayhawks blew out the Buffaloes. The game was a push.

No. 4 Tennessee 74, Georgia 71: After being held to just three points in the first half, Chris Lofton exploded for 19 after intermission as the Volunteers held off the Bulldogs in Athens, Ga. Tennessee failed to cover the 8-point spread.

No. 5 North Carolina 92, Virginia Tech 53: Tyler Hansbrough’s 23 points led the way for the Tar Heels, who won easily as 13-point favorites in Chapel Hill, N.C.

No. 7 Stanford 67, Arizona 66: The surprising Cardinal improved to 21-4 and also beat the point spread, which favored the host Wildcats by two.
