Last night, Amy Winehouse stole the show by winning five awards and with a killer, defiant performance of "You Know I'm No Good" and "Rehab." The singer, whose music career has been overshadowed by a severe drug addiction she is currently seeking treatment for, performed at the Grammys from London via satellite.

However, not everyone was happy with Amy's multiple Grammy wins.

“I don’t think she deserved it,” previous Grammy-winning singer Natalie Cole said. “I think she needs to get her life together first, and then get the awards later."

Cole also complained that we are teaching youngsters that they can get rewarded for bad behavior and called Winehouse "crazy."

Winehouse won record of the year, best female artist, best female pop vocal performance, best song and best pop vocal album.

The Grammy Awards don’t always get it right. Actually, they mostly get it wrong. But Sunday night the awards show celebrated its 50th anniversary by correcting a ridiculous oversight. No, Kanye West didn’t win the Best Album award, but someone who has waited much longer did.

Jazz great Herbie Hancock came away with an upset victory to win his first Best Album award. It was also only the second such honor for a jazz album in the Grammys’ history.

Hancock beat out West, who was the betting favorite for “Graduation”, and the night’s big winner, Amy Winehouse. Whether West will blow up and cry foul and prejudice we’ll have to wait and see, but he shouldn’t have much beef with Hancock, considering how long the legendary star had to wait for this honor. “River: The Joni Letters”, a collaboration with Joni Mitchell, features some of the music world’s top musicians. It’s as far from mainstream as you can get but it is musical genius.

“Joni Mitchell. Joni Mitchell. Joni Mitchell. Thank you so much,” Hancock said during his acceptance speech. “It's been 43 years since the first and only time that a jazz artist got the Album of the Year award. I'd like to thank the academy for courageously breaking the mold this time and in doing so honoring the giants upon whose shoulders I stand.”

West did come away with four Grammys, but all were in the rap category. He has complained that the Grammy voters don’t consider his genre legitimate. “Graduation” entered the night with 1/3 Grammy odds. Hancock’s record was the longest shot at 25/1.

Highlights on the night included:

• West’s performance of “Stronger” and “Hey Mama”, a tribute to his late mother Donda West, who died last year of complications from plastic surgery.
• Winehouse, who won five awards, performing with her ultra-cool band via satellite from England then looking stunned when she collected the Grammy for Record of the Year. She couldn’t be in Los Angeles for the ceremonies because of drug convictions that delayed processing of her U.S. visa.
• A scary-looking Tina Turner singing her 80’s smash “What’s Love Gotta Do With It?” then teaming up with Beyonce Knowles on “Proud Mary”.
• A tribute to The Beatles featuring Cirque du Soleil.

Just maybe Kanye West won’t have anything to complain about this time.

Even before the broadcast of the 50th Grammy Awards began West was a three-time winner. This year’s leading nominee for the music industry’s biggest night scored the honor for Best Rap Solo Performance for his hit “Stronger”.

Scheduled to perform during the broadcast, West is also up for the award considered the most coveted in music – the Grammy for Best Album of the Year.

It’s the third time he’s been nominated in that category but he didn’t win the last two times and derided the voters for not recognizing rap as a legitimate form of music on par with rock and country.

However, his latest effort, “Graduation”, entered Sunday’s broadcast as the betting favorite with Grammy odds of 1/3 to win.

This year’s other notable newsmaker, British newcomer and global drug freak Amy Winehouse, was also a big winner in the pre-broadcast ceremonies. She won for Best Pop Vocal and Best Female Pop Vocal, but wasn’t present to accept the awards. Winehouse’s U.S. visa was delayed because of her drug convictions in the UK. She was scheduled to perform via satellite during the broadcast.

When Kanye West was added to the lineup of Grammy Awards performers on Friday it was good news for fans who recall his riotous performance of “Golddigger” a couple of years ago with Jamie Foxx and a marching band.

West is one of the best entertainers around and figures to kick things up a few notches when he hits the stage Sunday night in Los Angeles for the 50th annual celebration of American music’s elite. But West may offer a sober moment, too, because he’s likely to use the occasion to honor his late mother, Donda West, who died last year after suffering complications from plastic surgery.

In the Best Album category, considered the top award of the night, West is the favorite to win. “Graduation” holds Grammy Awards odds of 1/3 and is up against “Back to Black” (Amy Winehouse, 11/4), “Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace” (Foo Fighters, 7/2), “These Days” (Vince Gill, 25/1) and “River: The Joni Letters” (Herbie Hancock, 25/1).

Amy Winehouse or no Amy Winehouse or satellite-feed Amy Winehouse, the Grammy Awards will go on. Even though the biggest night for the music industry to navel gaze is going to be missing one of the breakout artists of 2007, there will still be a number of marquee names, both old and new.

From Rihanna to John Fogerty, Sunday’s Grammys will feature a range of performers. The UK-based Winehouse was initially denied a U.S. visa to attend the ceremonies because of her conviction for drug use. She eventually did receive the visa but said it was too late to travel for the show, so she will perform via satellite. Winehouse is up for five awards.

A new but familiar name, Chris Daughtry of American Idol fame, is up for four awards, including Best Rock Album. That category is studded with high-profile names in rock. Daughtry is up against John Fogerty, Bruce Springsteen, the Foo Fighters and Wilco.

The Foo Fighters are the favorites with Grammy odds of 4/11 to win for “Echoes, Silence, Patience and Grace”.

Amy Winehouse will be watching this year's Grammy Awards from the couch at her drug rehabilitation clinic. The singer, who is nominated for six awards and was slated to perform, has been denied a U.S. visa, according to People magazine.

"The singer has been invited to appear at the event on Sunday after receiving an amazing six nominations for the prestigious awards," her publicist told People. "Unfortunately, her application for a visa to enter the United States of America has been rejected at this time by the American Embassy in London." Hmmm, maybe it's because they heard she does drugs?

"Amy has been progressing well since entering a rehabilitation clinic two weeks ago, and although disappointed with the decision, has accepted the ruling and will be concentrating on her recovery," Winehouse's publicist said. "Amy has been treated well and fairly by the Embassy staff and thanks everyone for their support in trying to make this happen. There will of course be other opportunites and she very much looks forward to visitng America in the near future."
