The 2009 Breeders' Cup has released their schedule for the upcoming races. Bloodhorse is reporting that the Friday, November 6 program will consist of six Breeders’ Cup races, beginning with the $500,000 Breeders’ Cup Marathon, and will be followed by five consecutive Breeders’ Cup races for females.

The Saturday card will feature eight Breeders’ Cup races – which will all lead up to the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic (gr. I). Saturday’s card will also include the grade II Oak Tree Derby and the Damascus Stakes.

Kenneth Kirchner, president of FalKirk International and wagering consultant to the Breeders’ Cup, told the press: "We believe that the schedule of six championships races on Friday and eight on Saturday will provide better balance to the program and greater betting opportunities for the fans. Fans should find the Pick 6 sequence on Friday and Saturday to be great bets and based on last year's $1 million Friday Pick 6 handle, we could enjoy a substantial carryover into Saturday."

Australia has implemented new rules to limit the use of whips in horse races to only three times in the last 200 metres of a race. Jockeys are arguing that it's too distracting to count how many times they whip a horse and have threatened to strike unless the new limit is overturned.

Melbourne trainer Rick Hore-Lacy criticized jockeys for walking out midway through a series of race meetings yesterday.

‘‘They were selfish and irresponsible, I believe, calling the meetings off yesterday,’’ he told Radio 3AW.

The new regulations were implemented to stop jockeys from unnecessarily flogging a horse until the finishing line. However, critics are saying that the use of whips is still way over regulations are in other countries. Des Gleeson, Tasmania's chief racing officer, says a rider in England can't use a whip more than nine times through the length of a race, compared to 18 times in Australia.

"Generally it's been accepted, and riders tend to get the best out of their horses riding hands and heels, and using the whip very sparsely," he says.

The field of 12 thoroughbreds slated to face off in Sunday's $1 million Pacific Classic at Del Mar racetrack in San Diego are pretty evenly matched. However, a strong favorite has emerged in 2008 Travers winner and recent winner of a turf race at Del Mar, Colonel John.

Running from post six, the 4-year-old has joined forces with last year's winning jockey and four-time Pacific Classic winner Garrett Gomez. Trained by Eoin Harty for WinStar Farms, Colonel John recently took the Wickerr Stakes at Del Mar in his first race of the year, and has earned more than $1.5 million in his lifetime.

"I chose the Pacific Classic because I didn't have to ship and he's shown a fondness for this racetrack down here," Eoin Harty told the media about his decision. "He's trained very, very well over the surface, and I just felt that, you know, the odds were stacked in my favor if I stay here rather than go to New York and tackling Rachel Alexandra."

Colonel John's biggest competition is Einstein, who won the Santa Anita Handicap. Other horses in contention include Rail Trip, the winner of the Hollywood Gold Cup in his last start, as well as Informed, Mast Track and Awesome Gem.

Three-year-old fillies will get a chance to make some money with the absence of Rachel Alexandra in the $600K Alabama. The field has improved since it was announced that she would not run it. The 1 1/4-mile event at Saratoga Aug. 22 will have a solid field of fillies trying to become the second-best three-year-old filly in America.

American Oaks (gr. I) winner Funny Moon will be looking to outrun challengers like Be Fair and Careless Jewel. She will break from post 3 with regular rider Alan Garcia aboard.

Alan Brodsky’s Don’t Forget Gil nearly won the American Oaks despite being a 15-1 longshot. She was also runner-up in the April 11 Comely (gr. II) at Aqueduct, while she won her only graded stakes victory at Tampa Bay Downs in the March 13 Florida Oaks (gr. III). Also still in the mix are Wynning Ride and Casanova Move.

The 53rd running of the $350K Del Mar Oaks is set for the afternoon of August 22. A field of some of the best three-year-old fillies will be tested along nine furlongs. Entrants should include Honeymoon Handicap winner Well Monied, and could potentially include Starlarks, Strawberry Tart, and Hameildaeme.

Well Monied not only won the Honeymoon Handicap but she turned in a good performance in the $700,000 Gr. 2 American Oaks, also at Hollywood Park, last month. She will confirm her status as a turf runner. The other late bloomer is Starlarks, who has a win in the come-from-behind battle against favorite Carlsbad on the Del Mar turf.

Strawberry Tart, who was barely caught at the wire in the San Clemente Handicap by Starlarks, will be looking to even the score in the Del Mar Oaks. She is 4-1-0 in seven starts and has already earned over $182K in stakes winnings.

Shared Account will look to post her first stakes victory in the $150,000 Lake Placid Stakes at Saratoga. She is coming off a tough loss to Blind Date in the Grade 3 Virginia Oaks at Colonial Downs where she lost to a head bob.

Contenders Consequence and Mary’s Follies both hope that the race stays on turf and doesn’t get rained off the track. Consequence has had only one race in the last three months. "She's a little thing, she doesn't need much training," said trainer Shug McGaughey. "I hope [1 1/8 miles] is not stretching her."

Mary’s Follies will be coming off a win in the Grade 3 Boiling Springs at Monmouth Park. Keertana won the Grade 3 Regret at Churchill, and is the only member of this field to have won at 1 1/8 miles. In eight starts she’s 3-2-1 and has earned over $179K along the way.

The juveniles will get their chance to prove their worth in the $150,000 Saratoga Special (G2) at Saratoga Race Course on August 20. Florida-bred D’Funnybone will be making his stakes debut as the 7-2 favorite in the field of nine juveniles. The 6 ½-furlong Saratoga Special is the longest distance D’Funnybone has ever raced.

The second favorite is Zip Quik, who is listed at 4-1. The two-year-old colt is coming off a second-place finish in last month’s $100,000 Hollywood Juvenile Championship (G3) at Hollywood Park. He has run all three of his career races on synthetic surfaces and will be tested on dirt for the first time.
