With a victory Saturday, their second in two days over the Milwaukee Brewers, the Philadelphia Phillies edged one game closer to the National League East-leading New York Mets.

Now, just two games behind the Mets for the NL East postseason berth and two behind Milwaukee for the wild card, Jimmy Rollins and company can look forward to an intense last few weeks of the 2008 season.

The Phillies took a five-run lead early in the game against Milwaukee and held on throughout thanks to a solid outing from reigning NL MVP Rollins. Starting pitcher Cole Hamels recorded his 13th victory of the season.

Rollins erupted for three hits in five at bats including one two-run homer, a single and a double.

Meanwhile in New York City, Johan Santana and the Mets were hard at work trying to put away the Atlanta Braves and thus pad their division lead.

After seven scoreless innings Santana was replaced by relief pitcher Scott Schoeneweis who registered the loss, while Atlanta's Jeff Ridgeway recorded the win.

Jeff Francoeur led the late charge for the Braves with two eighth-inning RBI.

Elsewhere in baseball the A.J. Burnett and the Toronto Blue Jays blew by the Boston Red Sox 8-1, keeping their playoff aspirations alive. The two teams are currently in the midst of their second of a double-header in Boston.

Reigning National League MVP Jimmy Rollins was a late scratch from Philadelphia's 3-1 loss to the New York Mets on Thursday after he was late showing up to Shea Stadium.

"Jimmy was late getting to the yard today," said Phillies manager Charlie Manuel. "I called him in and talked to him. Jimmy and I talked about it, that's all I've got to say. It's kind of an in house thing, between him and I."

It's been a frustrating year already for Rollins, who missed almost a month of action earlier in the season with a sprained left ankle. His batting average is hovering around .270 and he's yet to find the fantastic form he displayed a season ago.

How will this news affect the Phillies as they chase the Mets in the NL East? Get all your MLB Baseball betting odds and futures in the Bodog Sportsbook today!
