The Kansas City Royals’ batting order and defensive alignment could look somewhat different when they take the field Friday against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Third baseman Alex Gordon, who has been out since having hip surgery in mid-April, and shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt, who was acquired in a trade with the Mariners for two pitching prospects, are minor league rehab partners.

Both, however, will likely be activated soon after the break, possibly as early as Friday.

This will give Trey Hillman a lot more options when setting the lineup.

The Rays will be ready to go in an attempt to make up for two straight losses before the break when their bullpen failed.

Friday James Shields will be the guy to get the team back on track as he will look to win for the first time since the end of June.

He will be opposed by Zack Greinke, who is 10-5 for the Royals this season.

The Boston Red Sox will host the reeling Kansas City Royals for four games going into next week’s All-Star break, and they’ll be looking for a third straight victory overall when they open the season series tonight.

Boston had the best home record in the majors entering its weekend series against Seattle, but it dropped two of three to the Mariners and managed two hits while losing 6-0 Monday against Oakland.

Boston’s offense will try to offer better support to Brad Penny than it has lately. The righthander has just one win in his last five starts despite a 2.20 ERA over that span.

Kansas City will counter with Luke Hochevar. The former No. 1 overall draft pick has been showing signs of progress lately, going 4-1 with a 3.40 ERA in his last six starts.

The -210 favored Red Sox outscored Kansas City 45-20 while going 6-1 in last season’s series.

Brian Bannister tries to bounce back from a rare midday defeat this afternoon when the Kansas City Royals try to beat the Houston Astros for their first sweep on the road this season.

Bannister suffered his first daytime loss of 2009 in Saturday's 7-1 defeat versus St. Louis. The righthander is 3-1 with a 1.29 ERA in four afternoon starts compared to a 2-3 mark with a 5.56 ERA at night. He is 15-5 during the day in his career and only 13-25 at night.

He will look to lead the Royals to their first sweep on the road since they won three straight in Detroit last September.

Kansas City's interleague record is 7-7, while Houston is 3-8 versus the AL. The Astros are 0-5 at home in interleague play, scoring just 12 runs at Minute Maid Park.

Brian Moehler gets the start for the Astros.

With each coming off complete-game victories, Kansas City's Luke Hochevar and Arizona's Dan Haren are also searching for a third straight winning decision tonight in the finale of a three-game series between the Royals and Diamondbacks.

Hochevar has won both starts since being recalled from Triple-A Omaha, and recorded his first career complete game Friday against visiting Cincinnati.

Haren has stayed among the NL's ERA leaders for most of this season, but hasn't benefited as much as he should because of a struggling offense and bullpen.

The Diamondbacks were scoring an average of 2.7 runs through his first eight starts but have since averaged nearly 6.9 over his last five.

Haren will also try to improve to 8-0 in his last nine interleague starts and keep from losing one for the first time since 2006.

Mark Reynolds is batting .423 with three homers and nine RBIs over the last seven games for the D-Backs.

After struggling through his worst outing of the year, Zack Greinke looks to recapture his early-season form and help the Kansas City Royals get consecutive wins for the first time in more than three weeks tonight in the finale of a three-game series against the Cleveland Indians.

Kansas City's success with Greinke on the mound has fallen off. The righthander won his first six starts, but the Royals are only 2-4 in his last six.

Now Greinke will be charged with helping Kansas City win back-to-back games for the first time since mid-May. He's 2-3 with a 2.48 ERA over his last seven starts against Cleveland, including 1-0 with a 1.64 ERA in two this year.

The Indians will try to bounce back behind Jeremy Sowers. Sowers is 2-1 with a 3.43 ERA in four career starts against the Royals.
