We’re about to find out whether the No. 8 Texas Tech Red Raiders are indeed all that. They’ve plowed their way to a 4-0 record (1-0-1 ATS), but two of those opponents were from the FCS. The other two were SMU (+36) and Nevada (+10.5). That is a very weak non-conference schedule.

The problem is, the Kansas State Wildcats (3-1 SU, 1-2 ATS) have proved even less up to this point. If anything, their 38-29 loss at Louisville (+5.5) suggests the Wildcats are going to have a very tough time Saturday as 7.5-point home dogs versus the Red Raiders.

One thing we’re certain to see is lots of offense. Texas Tech is scoring 45.8 points per game; Kansas State is even better at 47 points. Neither team defends particularly well, but the Red Raiders have the edge in this department, allowing 4.8 yards per play to KSU’s 5.0 yards.
The Kansas State Wildcats must feel pretty good about themselves. They’re 2-0 to start the season, dumping Montana State 69-10 in the opener and throwing a 45-6 wet blanket over North Texas (+29.5) in Week 2. But Montana State is in the FCS, and North Texas is one of the worst teams in the FBS. What can K-State do against Louisville?

The Cardinals (1-1 SU, 0-1 ATS) aren’t getting a lot of respect in this contest after losing 27-2 to Kentucky (+3.5) in the season opener. You can click here for the latest odds on this and the rest of the Week 4 slate. I like this matchup in particular because I believe the Cards are in fact the better team, and they get to play at home. The Louisville defense was strong against Kentucky; the offense will develop on the fly under first-year coordinator Jeff Brohm. Meanwhile, nobody on K-State has broken a sweat. That all changes Wednesday night.

Once again the Wisconsin Badgers heard about the star on the other side of the floor. And again the workmanlike Big Ten champs didn’t buckle.

Kansas State’s Michael Beasley got his points but the rest of the Wildcats did very little against Wisconsin, which claimed a 72-55 second-round victory Saturday in the NCAA Tournament.

While Beasley got all the hype, the Badgers’ team effort overwhelmed No. 11 K-State in the second half of the Midwest Region game. Behind 25 points from Trevon Hughes, Wisconsin pulled away to reach the Sweet 16 round of March Madness.

The Badgers were favored by 4.5 on the point spread in Omaha, Neb. They cruised behind a tenacious defense that allowed only freshman Beasley (23 points) and Billy Walker (18) to reach double figures for K-State.

In the West Region on Saturday afternoon:

No. 3 Xavier 85, No. 6 Purdue 78: The Musketeers did their best all-for-one-one-for-all performance as they spread the offense around to dismantle the Boilermakers in Washington, D.C. Drew Landender and C.J. Anderson both scored 18 points, and Josh Duncan added 16 in the win. Xavier covered the three-point spread.

Here are the NCAA men’s basketball tournament second round results.
It looked like it could be the No. 6 USC Trojans' night as Kansas State's superstar forward Michael Beasely got into early foul trouble.

But he got plenty of help from redshirt freshman Bill Walker and the No. 11 Wildcats were able to upset the Trojans 80-67.

Walker put up 22 points and was three of four from three-point land, carrying the Wildcats most of the first half. In the second, Beasely emerged, and finished with 23 points and 11 boards.

Other star freshman O.J. Mayo did his best to keep the Trojans alive, he scored 20 points but was six of 16 from the field.

The Wildcats easily covered as 3.5-point underdogs.

O.J. Mayo and Michael Beasley are two of the best players in the NCAA (AP Images)

When O.J. Mayo and the USC Trojans take on Michael Beasley and the Kansas State Wildcats in the opening round of the NCAA basketball tournament, it’ll be a battle of future NBA lottery picks.

The NCAA selection committee knew what it was doing by pitting these two stars against each other in the opening round and it’ll likely be one of the most watched games of the opening round.

Although Kansas State comes in as +3.5 underdogs, the power of Beasley should not be underestimated. His first-year averages 26.5 points and 12.4 rebounds were good enough to be named the Big 12 Player of the Year and carried his team to impressive wins over Pitt and Kansas, two of the country’s best basketball schools.

Fact is, Kansas State can beat anybody, anytime. However, the Wildcats were just 4-6 down the stretch and will have their hands full with USC.

Mayo’s stop in SoCal was a bust in many people’s minds, yet the Trojans have knocked off likes of UCLA and Stanford during this campaign. Mayo led the team with 20.8 points and 4.6 rebounds and his performance is key to any success they may have in the tournament.

There may be no bigger wildcard in the Big Dance than the Trojans and if they can get past Beasley and generate some momentum, USC could find itself back in the Sweet 16 for the second season in a row.

For all NCAA odds visit the Bodog sportsbook.
