Coming off their longest summer break since 2000, the San Antonio Spurs open their season tonight when they host a New Orleans Hornets team that’s also looking to bounce back from a first-round playoff exit.

NBA basketball betting odds have the Spurs listed as 8.5-point favorites.

Over the summer the Spurs acquired forward Richard Jefferson from Milwaukee for Bruce Bowen, Kurt Thomas, and Fabricio Oberto. San Antonio also signed veterans Antonio McDyess and Theo Ratliff in the offseason to bolster its frontcourt.

Chris Paul, who finished fifth in last season’s MVP voting, won’t have Tyson Chandler to pass to this season after the Hornets traded the center to Charlotte for Emeka Okafor.

David West scored a career-best 21.0 points per game with 8.5 rebounds in 2008-09. He averaged 23.5 points and 10.5 boards as the Hornets and Spurs split four games last season.

New Orleans has lost three straight and nine of 10 in San Antonio.

Denver's 58-point win over the New Orleans Hornets matched the most lopsided victory in NBA playoff history, the Minneapolis Lakers' 133-75 blowout of the St. Louis Hawks in 1956.

More importantly, it put the Nuggets ahead 3-1 in their best-of-seven series and on the verge of winning a playoff matchup for the first time since 1994. The last time they won a best-of-seven series was 1985.
The Nuggets stifled Chris Paul, whose four points and six assists amounted to one of the worst games of his career, with waves of double teams that induced a half-dozen turnovers.

Denver's biggest pitfall could be overconfidence, but after the beatdown they put on the Hornets it would be shocking if this series did not end tonight.
Barring foul trouble, Paul's stamina will be tested as much, if not more, in Game 4 tonight, and backers are counting on it.

With the Hornets desperate for a victory as the series shifted to New Orleans, Byron Scott shortened his rotation, using only three reserves in Game 3.

James Posey sprained his right knee, but played through the injury throughout the second half and is expected to do the same as the Hornets attempt to even the series at 2-2.

Carmelo Anthony had ice on his right elbow after Sunday's practice, treating a contusion he suffered in the fourth quarter of Game 3. Anthony said he would definitely play.

Tyson Chandler, playing with a sore left ankle that has bothered him for weeks, also is expected to start for the 2.5-point favored Hornets.
That approach served the Nuggets' Kenyon Martin and Nene well as Martin stymied David West and Nene kept Tyson Chandler in check. Also mixing it up in the lane was Chris Andersen, who blocked four shots in Game 1.

The Hornets weren't exactly thrilled with some of Denver's tactics, taking particular exception to the way Dahntay Jones was checking and pushing around Chris Paul.

It must of worked because Paul finished with 21 points on 7-of-19 shooting.

The 6-point favored Nuggets wouldn't mind seeing Carmelo Anthony bounce back after being limited to just 13 points. Then again he did not play much in the second half due to the blowout.

The favorite is 5-1 ATS in the last six meetings between these clubs.

They get a New Orleans Hornets team that struggled down the stretch, losing six of eight and missing a chance to move up to No. 6.

They split the season series 2-2, with each team winning once on the road, but the teams were rarely at full strength when they met. The Nuggets were missing Carmelo Anthony for one of their losses, while the Hornets never had Tyson Chandler and were also without Peja Stojakovic in one of the losses.

Without Peja, the Hornets were robbed of their only real reliable 3-point threat. He averaged 20.7 points against Denver, and with that kind of production the Hornets stand a much better chance of upsetting the Nuggets.
CP3 posted his sixth triple-double Wednesday night, compiling 30 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds in a 109-98 win at Washington.

Last time these teams met Tyson Chandler tipped in a missed shot off the backboard with 3.3 seconds left as New Orleans won its sixth straight versus Milwaukee. The Bucks haven't won in this series since 2005.
The Bucks have dropped eight of 11, including a 120-112 loss to New York on Tuesday night in which they wasted a 32-point effort from Charlie Villanueva.

New Orleans has committed only 12.6 turnovers a contest and hasn't turned the ball over more than 19 times in a single game all season.

The Hornets enter this one as 3.5-point favorites.

The New Orleans Hornets adjustment after trading their center is going to be a lot easier than first thought. Tyson Chandler failed his physical with Oklahoma City on Wednesday night, one day after the Hornets traded him, so he was returned to New Orleans.

Chandler has missed the last 14 games since spraining his left ankle Jan. 12. He’s scheduled to join the Hornets in Los Angeles, where they play the Lakers on Friday, though he’s not expected to play during the three-game road trip.

That means New Orleans will be undermanned against one of the best teams in the NBA.

The Lakers beat the Warriors in Oracle Arena on Wednesday night and continued their torrid offensive pace.
One thing going for the Hornets is their impressive 4-0 ATS record in the last four meetings in Los Angeles. Will they have the depth to steal another one from the Lakers?

After moving Tyson Chandler, the New Orleans Hornets hope to have enough interior defense to counter Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic when the clubs meet tonight in New Orleans.

The trade brought veteran Joe Smith and Chris Wilcox to New Orleans and should give the team some salary cap room next season, but it could weaken the Hornets inside for the remainder of this season.

Even worse is the fact that it is unclear if Smith or Wilcox will be with the Hornets tonight. Not a good thing with Howard coming to town.

The Magic center had a career-high 45 points on 16-of-23 shooting from the field with 19 rebounds and eight blocked shots and helped Orlando beat Charlotte on Tuesday.

Orlando, a 1-point underdog tonight, is 11-2 on the road against Western Conference opponents this season.
