Andy Reid usually doesn't play most of his starters in the final preseason game. But if some of the starters do play, that can be a sign that they haven't locked up a starting job.

One guy who will be playing for sure for the Eagles is Michael Vick. Vick will play in the Eagles' final preseason game, and might even take some snaps as a conventional quarterback.

How much Vick plays against the Jets has yet to be determined.

Vick was in for six wildcat plays in Thursday's game against Jacksonville, throwing four times, running once, and handing the ball off once.

The Jets are coming off a two-point win over the Giants. Rookie QB Mark Sanchez showed vast improvement over his last game, and kept tight throughout all of his playing time.

Now that the New York Giants have ended training camp, it is time to prepare for the two most meaningful games of the preseason. Next is a game Saturday night against the New York Jets.

The Giants are currently listed as 3-point home favorites in this one.

Eli Manning has looked a bit sluggish and out of sync with his teammates in the first two games. Nothing has happened in the passing game, resulting in two mediocre offensive performances.

The Giants have had some excuses to fall back on. Middle linebacker Antonio Pierce, safety Kenny Phillips, and cornerback Aaron Ross were out, while starting guards Chris Snee and Rich Seubert sat out on offense.

Tom Coughlin plans to play his regulars a little more this weekend against the Jets.

The Jets enter this game looking for their first win of the preseason after losing close ones to both the St. Louis Rams and Baltimore Ravens.

Rookie New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan will get to play some of his old friends when he travels to Baltimore to face the Ravens, who are his former team.

Bodog has the Ravens listed as 3-point home favorites for tonight's game.

While it is just the preseason Ryan might have a little extra incentive to prove that he could have been the Ravens coach after being bypassed last year for John Harbaugh. Harbaugh does not seem to take much interest in the preseason, which means his aging veterans won't get much more than a few series.

The Jets have a quarterback battle in full swing between rookie Mark Sanchez and Kellen Clemens.

The Ravens have a position battle of their own at running back between Willis McGahee and Ray Rice. Right now it is too close to call, with both players playing well in last week’s win over the Redskins.

I try to be a glass half-full type of guy, but I just don’t see why anyone thinks the Jets will approach .500 this year. I would argue this team massively overachieved last season with Brett Favre and will take a big step back this year under rookie QB Mark Sanchez and first-year head coach Rex Ryan.

Don’t get me wrong, I think this team will be competitive. Ryan brought a bunch of Ravens defenders with him, so that unit should be just as good against the run as it was last year (7th) but better against the pass (29th in 2008), especially with adding cornerback Lito Sheppard from the Eagles. Ryan’s attacking 3-4 scheme virtually assures a top-10 overall defensive finish.

And there’s little doubt the Jets will rely heavily on the run, whether it’s Sanchez (as expected) or Kellen Clemens under center. Thomas Jones led the AFC in rushing (1,312) and tied for the lead in TDs (15) last season, but most expect him to slow down at age 31. But Ryan has said he wants Leon Washington to get many more touches this year, and the team also drafted Doak Walker Award winner Shonn Greene out of Iowa. Seriously, this club could lead the NFL in carries in 2009 behind a good offensive line. However, the offense will miss WR Laveraneus Coles, especially with not much else behind new No. 1 Jerricho Cotchery.

Expect a lot of low-scoring, close games as the Jets play ball control and try to win by winning the turnover battle and with their excellent special teams.

Here is the Jets’ 2009 schedule, and we’ll break it down after:

Sept. 13 at Houston Texans, 1 p.m.

Sept. 20 vs. New England Patriots, 1 p.m.

Sept. 27 vs. Tennessee Titans, 1 p.m.

Oct. 4 at New Orleans Saints, 4:05 p.m.

Oct. 12 at Miami Dolphins, 8:30 p.m.

Oct. 18 vs. Buffalo Bills, 4:15 p.m.

Oct. 25 at Oakland Raiders, 4:05 p.m.

Nov. 1 vs. Miami Dolphins, 1 p.m.

Week 9: Bye

Nov. 15 vs. Jacksonville Jaguars, 1 p.m.

Nov. 22 at New England Patriots, 4:15 p.m.

Nov. 29 vs. Carolina Panthers, 1 p.m.

Dec. 3 at Buffalo Bills, 8:20 p.m. (Toronto)

Dec. 13 at Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 1 p.m.

Dec. 20 vs. Atlanta Falcons, 1 p.m.

Dec. 27 at Indianapolis Colts, 4:15 p.m.

Jan. 3 vs. Cincinnati Bengals, 1 p.m.

Strength of schedule: 7th (opponents combined to go 145-110-1, .568, in 2008)

Projected record: 4-12

Bodog over/under total: 7

Bodog odds to win AFC East: 8/1

Bodog odds to win AFC: 18/1

Bodog odds to win Super Bowl XLIV: 40/1

If there is one lock game on the NFL board in Week 1, it’s the Jets losing at Houston. Not just because the Texans are a better team and at home, but because New York is expected to be without two of its best defensive players: Shaun Ellis and Calvin Pace. Ellis, a tackle, is expected to be suspended for the opener after getting caught with marijuana late last season. That decision hadn’t come down as of this writing, but Ellis himself expects to miss that one game. He led the Jets with eight sacks last year. For sure out is Pace, a linebacker who had seven sacks last year. He was suspended for the first four games for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy. Pace’s seven sacks in 2008 were a career high, and he added 67 tackles, five forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries.

The Week 2 game against the Patriots is the fourth consecutive year that the Patriots have been the opponent in New York’s home opener. Does that rivalry lose anything with former New England assistant Eric Mangini no longer coaching Gang Green?

In an interesting twist, the Jets shouldn’t have to worry much about the conditions in seven of their eight road games. Oh, it might be a problem in Week 11 at New England, but the Jets have four road games at teams with roofs (that Buffalo game is in Toronto; it’s New York’s first game north of the border since a 1988 exhibition in Montreal), two in Florida and one in California. That New York has only one West Coast game is a positive, considering the team was 0-4 out there last year, which basically cost it a playoff spot.

Frankly, if the Jets have any chance at reaching .500, in my opinion, they need to go 4-0 in the four-game stretch starting Week 6. It’s certainly not impossible that New York beats Buffalo, Miami and Jacksonville at home and wins at Oakland. Unfortunately, I also think the Jets enter Week 6 at 0-5.

That season finale with the Bengals is the last scheduled NFL regular-season game at the Meadowlands, with both the Jets and Giants moving into a new stadium next season.

The St. Louis Rams and the 4-point favored New York Jets will both be gunning for a preseason victory on Friday when they meet at Giants Stadium. The main buzz about this game is everyone's chance to see former Southern Cal standout Mark Sanchez in a new, New York Jet-green uniform.

The 4-point favored Jets will throw out Kellen Clemens and Sanchez as both quarterbacks try to do their best to wow the coaching staff and get the nod as the opening day starter.

The situation in St Louis is much more solidified with Marc Bulger playing only limited action and then giving way to Kyle Boller and Brock Berlin.

Rams coach Scott Linehan hasn’t been one of the best preseason betting picks by any stretch of the imagination with a 5-7 overall record since taking over but he does have a decent 2-1 mark in Week 1.

The Mark Sanchez era opens Friday in tiny Cortland, N.Y., the Jets’ training camp home for three weeks. By the time they leave the Jets should have a sense of whether their prized rookie is ready to wear the crown abdicated by Brett Favre.

Sanchez can make that happen if he builds on the progress he showed last month at the end of minicamp, but there are no guarantees because this is uncharted territory. The Jets could become the first team in the modern passing era to come off a winning season with a true rookie as their opening-day quarterback.

If Sanchez turns out to be a tomorrow quarterback, it could be a slippery slope for Rex Ryan, a first-time coach with no experience in dealing with quarterbacks.

So it will be Sanchez vs. Kellen Clemens for the starting quarterback job and the smart money has to be on the big-money rookie, Sanchez.

The NFL's schedule-makers didn't do the New York Jets any favors this season, handing them the league's seventh-toughest schedule – although that's mainly due to the Jets playing in the very tough AFC East. Well, the NFL's decision-makers didn't do the Jets any favors this week, either, when they suspended linebacker Calvin Pace for the first four games of this upcoming season.

Pace, the team's best linebacker, violated the league's performance-enhancing substance policy, so it's not like he left NFL officials much choice in the matter. Pace said the positive test "resulted from an over-the-counter dietary supplement that contained a substance that I did not know violated the league's policy. I am responsible for what I put into my body, and I should have paid closer attention to the league's guidelines."

Indeed. And with this news, the Jets will enter Week 5 at 0-4. Pace is eligible to return to the Jets' active roster on the day after the team's Oct. 4 game against the New Orleans Saints.

Pace, who can take part in training camp and play in preseason games, led the team last year with 12 tackles for loss (fifth in the NFL) and five forced fumbles (including a TD return). He was second on the team in sacks with seven and had 80 tackles. How valuable was he? When Pace had at least a half-sack in a game last year, New York was 6-1. He had two sacks in Week 15 last year against the Bills, and that was the only game the Jets won among their final five.

Now the team has to count on disappointing 2008 rookie first-rounder Vernon Gholston to get pressure on the quarterback. He had just 13 tackles and zero sacks last year, including being inactive for a game, and reportedly hasn't been too stellar this offseason, either.

Take a look at the Jets' first four games: at Houston, vs. New England, vs. Tennessee, at New Orleans. That's three pretty good offensive teams. Frankly, the Jets, who are 40/1 odds to win Super Bowl XLIV on Bodog, were likely going to be underdogs in all of those even before Pace was suspended. But also remember this team is having to learn a new defensive philosophy under first-year head coach Rex Ryan and probably will be starting a rookie quarterback in Mark Sanchez on opening day.

Sorry, Jets fans. It's going to be a long season, and your team might not win a game — or even be favored to win one — until mid-to-late October.

You've no doubt heard by now that rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez, the No. 5 overall pick out of Southern Cal in this year's draft, already has agreed to a deal with the New York Jets.

Big deal, you say?

Well, it probably is to fellow Jets signal-caller Kellen Clemens. That's because new Jets coach Rex Ryan has been saying all offseason that the Jets' QB competition would be "fierce." But that's more like farce now. With Sanchez signed and guaranteed not to miss any of training camp and fall behind, Clemens' chances to win the job just disappeared.

It's clear the Jets wanted Sanchez in the mix at camp, as he is just the second first-rounder to sign (as of this writing), joining No. 1 overall pick Matthew Stafford of the Lions. Kudos to Sanchez, too, as he told his reps right from the start that he wanted to be signed early to send the "right message." That's leadership, although he did get the richest contract in Jet history ($28 million guaranteed over five years, $50 million possible through incentives).

New York, which is 35/1 odds to win Super Bowl XLIV on Bodog, wrapped up its final full-team offseason workout on Thursday, and Sanchez punctuated it by completing his final five passes in 11-on-11 drills, capped by a TD pass. It was his best day of practice to date according to reports. However, Clemens has spent most of the time with the first team in workouts and has looked better than Sanchez, at least until Thursday.

"We probably won't know (the starter) until … who knows?" said Ryan to reporters. "Whenever it becomes obvious to us, we'll make the decision."

That's coachspeak, and even Ryan has admitted he has a gut feeling of who his No. 1 will be. Let’s see, will it be the marketable rookie with the big upside or the guy entering his fourth season with a career TD/INT ratio of 5:11 and a QB rating of 59.3? Not to mention that Clemens is entering the final year of his contract.

Don't bother waiting around until August to hear Ryan's decision. It already has been made, barring an injury or Sanchez turning into Akili Smith overnight. Since Ryan will get a free pass in his first season in the Big Apple and has nothing to lose and everything to gain, Sanchez will become the third quarterback drafted in the top 10 in the past decade to start on Opening Day.

A year ago the Dolphins won only one game and finished dead last in the AFC East, but a win on Sunday over the Jets will give them the East title and a trip to the postseason.

The Jets can still make the postseason if they can beat Miami on Sunday and have the Bills help them out by beating the Patriots.

Another interesting point in this game is Miami quarterback Chad Pennington getting the chance to stick it to his former team. The Jets dumped Pennington in favor of Brett Favre and the switch hasn’t paid off lately. Pennington torched Kansas City for 235 yards and three touchdowns last week, while Favre struggled against Seattle, passing for 187 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions. In his last four games Favre has only one touchdown to four interceptions, while Pennington has six touchdowns and only one interception in his last four contests.

To do so the 5-point favored Jets have to reverse a trend of poor performances on the west coast. New York is 0-3 so far out west this season and can't afford to go 0-4.

Matt Hasselbeck will likely miss his eighth game Sunday for the Seahawks, who are coming off a big win at St. Louis, snapping a six-game losing streak.

The Seahawks have lost five straight at home since a 37-13 win over the Rams on Sept. 21 – their lone home win this season.

The Jets are going for their sixth straight victory against Seattle, where they haven't played since a 41-3 win on Aug. 31, 1997.
