The draft’s humble beginnings trace back to 1936, when the Philadelphia Eagles selected halfback Jay Berwanger from the University of Chicago. He chose not to play professional ball and became a sportswriter instead. New York City became the draft’s annual host in 1965; Madison Square Garden was the venue for a number of years until the powers that be moved to Radio City Music Hall in 2006.

We can credit ESPN for being the first broadcaster to truly put the national spotlight on the draft. They hopped on board in 1980 and will be there once again this weekend, starting Saturday at 4:00 p.m. Eastern.

The theme for this year's draft? Play it safe.

With the first pick in the NFL draft the Miami Dolphins have select…tackle Jake Long from Michigan University.

Long has signed a contract for five years worth $57.75 million with $30 million guaranteed.

Miami wanted to trade out of the pick in what has been categorized as a weak draft class, but found no suitors.

There was speculation that the Dolphins were pursuing Long only to force other top prospects to lower their asking price to be the No. 1 pick. But the Dolphins wanted Long from day one.

"We had him at the top of our board for a long time," Miami general manager Jeff Ireland said at a news conference.

Despite scouts saying he was better suited to play right tackle, the Dolphins plan to immediately use the 6-foot-7-inch prospect on the left side.

The Dolphins are hoping Long will help their anemic offense and improve on their 1-15 record last year.

According the NFL network's Adam Schefter, the St. Louis Rams have Arkansas running back rated highest on their draft board.

Is this the truth or a smokescreen? Sounds like smoke to me.

Although pairing McFadden with Steven Jackson will make the most formidable running back combo in the league the Rams have too many other needs.

The Rams could be leaking this story in order to force teams that were hoping for McFadden to fall to trade up with them.

Coincidently, Schefter is also reporting that the Saints have talked to the Rams about trading up for defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey, not McFadden.

Other NFL Draft news:

• Malcolm Kelly ran another 4.6 at his private workout Wednesday.
• Rotoworld.com reports the Panthers are interested in QB Matt Ryan if he falls to them at No. 13 in the draft.
• ESPN is reporting there are "major rumblings" that the Raiders want McFadden with the fourth pick in the draft.
