It's an age old question. Which is more important? Figuring out the math invloved with a certain call, raise or bet or figuring out the person you are playing against and what they are likely to do? Well, in today's installment of Bodog poker pro Justin Bonomo's new Q&A column, "Ask Justin," this exact issue is addressed.

See below for his thoughts on the matter:

Question:

I’ve read a many of your articles and blog posts and you seem to have a very balanced knowledge between the psychology and math of poker. Which aspect of your game do you depend on the most? Which are you strongest at or what’s most valuable to your success? What do you do to improve your knowledge and application of it?

Justin’s answer:

I think the term "math" gets the short end of the stick when it comes to poker. The "math guys" are good at critical thinking, not doing equations. Personally, I don't think psychology is anywhere near as important as the critical thinking and the general decision making process. The feel players tend to make decisions somewhat randomly. It's the "math guys" that are able to say "Normally I'd bet my top pair here, but this guy always bets when checked to on the turn. I'm going to check raise instead." or "My opponent never calls in this spot. He either makes a big raise or folds. I'm going to start betting smaller than normal to put him to the same decision for less of my stack." Being able to think like that is crucial to becoming a great poker player. The best way to get better at that is to have other good players to discuss strategy with. If you don't have that, try and find some poker playing friends. If you can't do that, there are good poker forums online, as well as good training sites that will help you get inside the head of a poker player going through the analytical process.

Agree? Disagree? Let us know in the comments, and if you want to see more, head over to Justin Bonomo's Poker Questions column and submit your questions today.

If you take the time to look at how many multi-table tournaments the top players play, you’ll be surprised at the level of action they are involved in. These players will play numerous tournaments at the same time, all day long.

This much action, all at once on a consistent basis, requires a good-size bankroll to fund. The amount of action you can handle depends on how much money you have. So the way to increase your action is to play more when you win more.

Grow the amount of the action you play with the size of the bankroll you have. The practice will make you better, and you’ll eventually have enough success to see your results in the player ranking standings. Get your online poker action in the Bodog poker room.

Everyone knows that poker players don't make their living from cashing in tournaments, although a nice payday definitely helps, they pay their bills by spending hours grinding it out in cash games. The legendary Bobby's Room at the Bellagio isn't a tournament area, it is strictly reserved for high-stakes cash games because that's how the big boys do it.

So, in recognition of this the WSOP Academy is launching a new style of poker camp, the appropriately-named Cash Game Academy. These two-day events will provide intensive poker training dedicated exclusively to No Limit Hold’em cash game play, giving poker players of all skill levels the foundation and tools needed to become a consistent winning cash game player.

The first such event will take place at Harrah’s Atlantic City on Jan. 24 – 25. Then two weeks later, the WSOP Academy will head to Las Vegas to host a Cash Game Academy at Caesars Palace on Feb. 7 – 8. Both events will feature instruction from poker pros Mark Seif, Paul Wasicka and Alex Outhred among the instructors scheduled for the Atlantic City event and Seif, Outhred and Michael Gracz slated for the Las Vegas event.

The cash game teaching curriculum consists of two days of in-depth seminars, live play workshops, video analysis and a cash game competition. The topics being taught include the transition from tournament play to cash game play, development of reading ability and putting opponents on hand ranges, bankroll management and sophisticated plays and strategies specific to cash game play. Each event will also offer video analysis of cash game play, with instructors dissecting hands and situations and discuss alternative lines of play.

At the end of the Cash Game Academy, players will compete against their fellow WSOP Academy participants to determine who made the most correct decisions and managed their bankroll the best during a simulated cash game. The winner will receive an all-expense trip to Caesars Palace Las Vegas for the WSOP Academy Tournament of Champions, which will be held just prior to the Main Event of the 2009 World Series of Poker.

Tuition for each of the two Cash Game Academies is $1,899.00, with a payment of only $499.75 required to secure a spot. The additional tuition payment owed will be billed each month for the three following months.

Space is limited at all WSOP Academy events, and both events are expected to sell out in advance. Additional details for the upcoming events in Las Vegas and Atlantic City are available at the WSOP Academy website.

Bodog has recently put up a couple of videos of Bodog poker pros Evelyn Ng and Jean-Robert Bellande instructing poker beginners on the basics of the game.

In the first video, Ng demonstrates the rules of Texas Holdem. This video is great for novices, or beginners who could use a refresher course on the basics. She walks through a complete hand, using easy-to-follow in-game graphics. You'll learn the basics of betting, blinds, the flop, the turn, the river and the showdown. This video will give you all the basics you need to start playing Texas Holdem. But to review the written rules of the game, check out the Texas Holdem Guide.

In the second video, Bellande walks through the rank of winning hands in poker, from High Card to Royal Flush. If you can never remember if a Flush beats a Straight, this video is for you. You'll see each hand demonstrated with in-game graphics to help you learn this must-know info.

Once you've watched the video, check out the Official Bodog Cheat Sheet. It features the rank of hands, a glossary of acronyms used in online poker chat and even gives tips about starting hand selection.

The WSOP Academy has released details for its upcoming academies this November, including the introduction of a new “Play Now, Pay Later” program that allows participants to easily spread their tuition payments out over time, which is especially useful in this economy. You gotta spend money to make money, even in poker.

The first of the two WSOP Academy events will be a two-day Advanced Academy held at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, on Nov. 7 – 8, just ahead of the WSOP Main Event final table. Then, at the end of November, the WSOP Academy will head to Atlantic City to host a two-day Academy at the Showboat Casino, on Nov. 22 – 23.

With the “Play Now, Pay Later” program, participants can secure a spot at either event by paying only 25% of the tuition cost, with the remaining amount due in three equal monthly payments.

“We’re making it easier than ever for poker players to invest in their poker game and become winning players with our Play Now, Pay Later program,” said Jeff Goldenberg of Post Oak Productions, the company that produces the WSOP Academy. “Our WSOP Academy events this November will feature some of the biggest names in poker sharing their secrets and strategies. I’m confident our Academy grads will walk away with the confidence and skills they need to be a threat at the table.”

The upcoming Advanced Academy in Las Vegas will feature instruction from poker pros Phil Gordon, Mark Seif, Paul Wasicka and Alex Outhred, poker tells expert Joe Navarro and making their first appearance at an Academy event, Prof. Charley Swayne, an expert in probability and statistics specifically as they relate to poker and Sam Chauhan, a motivational speaker who will be teaching a seminar on the optimal poker mindset.

The event will feature the WSOP Academy’s most advanced curriculum on No Limit Texas Hold’em theory and strategy, including the advanced math of poker, winning cash game strategy, advanced tournament stage strategy, heads-up strategy, advanced seminar on decoding poker tells and much more.

At the WSOP Academy event in Atlantic City, 2004 World Champion Greg Raymer, Outhred, Hevad Khan and Navarro will provide instruction that covers all aspects of No-Limit Texas Hold 'em strategy, from playing position and calculating pot odds to the importance of aggression and changing gears.

At both Academy events, private tournaments will be held with winners receiving a $5,000 WSOP Circuit Main Event seat at an event of their choice.

Tuition for the Advanced Academy is $1,999, with a payment of only $499 required to secure a spot. The cost of the Atlantic City event is $1,499 with a payment of only $375 needed to register. The additional tuition payments will be billed each month for the three following months.

Space is limited at all WSOP Academy events, and both events are expected to sell out in advance. Additional details for the upcoming events in Las Vegas and Atlantic City are available at the WSOP Academy website.

When you are playing in a poker tournament, there will come a time when the next person who gets knocked out will receive nothing and everyone else will "make the money." This is well-known by most poker players as the "bubble" and very few players know how to play through it correctly. Instead of being scared and backing down from marginal holdings so you can be guaranteed to make the money, the correct course of action to take is to pick your spots and be very aggressive against others who you think might be weak or scared of the bubble.

One reason why you should be aggressive like this is because making the money shouldn't matter to you. You are playing to get first place and first place only! The bubble should just be another stage in the tournament where making chips is easier than before, thanks to the fear instilled in most novice players who are either playing outside their bankroll or extremely scared of bubbling after hours of play. When you happen to make the money, you really only make your buy-in back, plus a little extra, so if that's all it takes to make you happy, then perhaps you should just stick to the single table Sit and Go tournaments where your risk/reward is better for the percentage of time you are cashing.
