When Brock Lesnar took down Randy Couture in the second round of UFC 91 last night, he became just the second man to take the heavyweight title in just his fourth fight. The other? Couture himself.

The 6′3″, 265 pounder was just too much for the five-time champion Couture who hadn't fought in over a year, but the 45-year-old legend couldn't help but praise the new champion.

At 3-1 Lesnar now has the disctinction of being not only the UFC heavyweight champion, but the victory of what was dubbed as one of the biggest fights in UFC history.

UFC heavyweight champRandy Couture (16-8) may fight in a grappling match against Olympic gold medalist and former WWE superstarKurt Angle.

That's with a heavy emphasis on the "may."

Couture is still tied up in a legal battle with the UFC following his sudden departure from the octagon in October 2007. Since then, the UFC has prevented Couture from competing in any events. Angle has been talking about getting into MMA, but his words have been empty so far, despite negotiations with the UFC and IFL.

"There’s some hoops to jump through, me first and foremost getting cleared of the UFC," Couture tells MMAWeekly.com. "I’m sure they’re not going to give me permission to do anything at this point while I’m under contract with them."

If the match does happen, the former UFC champ says that Angle would be the one playing catchup. "Obviously, he’s a great wrestler," Couture explains. "He just hasn’t done any real competition for a number of years, so I think the burden is on him to step up and compete at that level again."

According to UFC heavyweight champion Randy "The Natural" Couture (16-8-0), rumors that he might fight top-ranked Russian fighter Fedor Emelianenko (27-1-0) in the UFC are just rumors.

After winning the heavyweight title, Couture left the octagon in October 2007, but said he would return if the UFC was able to sign Emelianenko. Now, with the news that Fedor might become a free agent, the UFC has another shot at signing him. But due to an ongoing court battle with his former employers, Couture says he won't return even if they get the man he wants to fight.

So where does Couture want to fight Fedor? "I care at this point that it's not in the UFC," he tells m1mixfight.com. "But outside of that, I don't care where it happens so long as it happens.

"I prefer to fight here in the U.S. It's where I'm confortable. For all the marketing reasons, this is the strongest market for the sport probably outside of Tokyo, but wherever it happens, it happens."

For now, Couture is dealing with his legal woes, but he says the fight should happen soon. "By fall, we'll hopefully have the fight going," Couture explains.

Despite court battles and contracts, the heavyweight match everyone wants to see might still happen in the UFC.

According to ESPN.com, top-ranked Russian heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko (27-1-0) is preparing to part ways with M-1 Global, the fighting organization to which he is currently signed, and will become a free agent as early as next week.

Emelianenko signed with M-1 last year, prompting UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture (16-8-0) to leave the octagon, citing their inability to sign Fedor as a key factor in his decision.

Now, with the UFC and Couture locked in an ugly court battle over his employment contract, it looks like all parties involved are being given a second chance to make the fight happen.

"We're open to a discussion," says Emelianenko's manager Apy Echteld. "If everybody is willing to put a little wine in the water, then we have something to work with. There is space for this to happen."

"I like Randy, I genuinely like to think he's a good guy," UFC president Dana White explains. "As much as we've gone back and forth on this, I would sign Fedor and do everything possible to get Randy in the octagon with him. I'd do anything, because A: it's a great fight and B: I think Randy would smash Fedor."

Zuffa LLC., the parent company of the UFC, has won the first court battle with their heavyweight champion Randy "The Natural" Couture (16-8-0).

A Clark County District Court in Las Vegas has granted their temporary injuction request that Couture be barred from “engaging in any promotion or production of events or programming related to unarmed combat during the February 29, 2008 [IFL] event.”

The ruling, by Nevada District Court Judge Jennifer Togliatti, prevents Couture from appearing at the International Fight Leage's show, IFL: New Blood, New Battles on Friday, Feb. 29 in Las Vegas. It also prevents use of the “name ‘Randy Couture’ and likeness on the IFL website, print materials, banners, and like materials to promote” the show.

Before the ruling, the IFL changed the name of Couture's team from Xtreme Couture to Team Tompkins. Shawn Tompkins will coach the fighters on Friday night.

"Given the ongoing litigation between Xtreme Couture and the UFC, we were asked by Xtreme Couture Wednesday to not use the Xtreme Couture camp name in our event this Friday," IFL representative Jerry Milani told MMAweekly.com. "The IFL is not in any way involved in this litigation. We are doing this out of professional courtesy for Randy and his group."

A specific ruling about the status of Couture's employment contract, and when "The Natural" will be able to fight again, remains undecided.

Bet on IFL odds in the Bodog Sportsbook.

As the legal dispute between the UFC and Randy Couture (16-8-0) continues, mixed martial arts fans are getting a glimpse of what the future might hold for "The Natural".

Recently, billionaire Mark Cuban entered the fray, filing a lawsuit against the UFC owners in a Texas court, asking for a ruling regarding when Couture's employment contract is due to expire, if at all. According to Zuffa LLC, parent company of the UFC, the agreement that Couture signed does not have an expiry date and remains valid under a "retirement clause". Both Couture and Cuban disagree.

"Zuffa's position regarding Couture is both illegal and involves critical timing," Cuban's filing states. "First, like all fighters, Couture's ability to fight at a championship level will diminish as he ages. Through their actions, Zuffa seeks to ensure that Couture is prevented from gainful employment and practicing his craft until he cannot be an elite fighter. Importantly, the law in Texas is clear that indefinite employment restrictions such as Zuffa claims to be enforcing are per se illegal and against public policy."

According to the document, Couture has entered into a a contract with HDNet Fights that is scheduled to commence once his UFC contract expires. This is the first step towards a fight against top-ranked Russian heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko (27-1-0), the only man Couture is interested in fighting.

Mark Cuban wants to know what the hell is going on between Randy Couture and the UFC. (AI Wire photo)

When does Randy Couture's contract with the UFC expire? It's the question every mixed martial arts fan is asking. Now, billionaire Mark Cuban wants an answer.

Cuban, who owns both the Dallas Mavericks and HDNet Fights, has filed a lawsuit against Zuffa LLC, the parent company of the Ultimate Fighting Championships, for a court ruling on when Couture's contract expires.

Couture (16-8-0) and the UFC have been locked in an ugly legal battle since the heavyweight champ left the octagon in October to pursue a fight against top-ranked Russian fighter Fedor Emelianenko (27-1-0). Since then, both parties have shared their own interpretation of the contract, with Couture saying his legal obligations are due to expire, and UFC owners saying that Couture is still under contract for two more remaining fights.

By asking for a ruling, Cuban removes any doubt about his stake in a potential fight between Emelianenko and Couture.

UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture (16-8-0) won't be fighting in the UFC again anytime soon.

In an interview with MMAweekly.com, Couture talks candidly about his legal battle with Zuffa LLC, the owners of the UFC, who say that he violated his employment contract by cornering fighters at other shows, such as Hardcore Fighting Championships, where he cornered Xtreme Couture fighter Mike Pyle (15-5-1) on Feb 1.

"It’s unfortunate that things have kind of degraded to that point," Couture says.

The suit, filed by the UFC on Jan. 11, seeks damages in excess of $10,000 for Couture's alleged infractions, but Zuffa's real strategy might be to drag the case out in court in the hopes of bleeding Couture's cash supply dry.

With his own clothing line, a growing movie career, and Xtreme Couture gyms springing up around the country, Couture says that isn't likely."I’m sure that’s part of their ploy," he explains, "to force me to spend enough money that I’ll have to come back and fight for them, which isn’t the case."

In addition to the lawsuit, Couture says that the UFC owners have tried to come after him in other ways.

"Like trying to ban my clothing line," he says. "Things like that that don’t really hurt me, they just hurt the athletes that we sponsor. We sponsor some 35 athletes with that clothing line, and give back to the sport in every way we can. We’re already in Nordstrom’s and Macy’s and all the big outlets, so it just takes away from money that the athletes are getting from their sponsorships. It’s kind of stupid."
