Weathering the storm of bad press, Tropic Thunder has so far earned a respectable 76 percent approval rating on rottentomatoes.com. Could the controversial comedy, which evolves around a group of celebrity ego-maniac actors hired to recreate the story of a Vietnam veteran, be the flick that knocks the Dark Knight off his prospective pedestal?

Newsday calls the Ben Stiller-directed comedy, "Gory, vulgar and wickedly funny. Easily the summer's best comedy," while Rolling Stone says, "Think of all the ways you can hurt yourself laughing, as in fall down, split your sides, bust a gut, blow your mind. You get it all in Tropic Thunder, a knockout of a comedy that keeps you laughing constantly."

New York Magazine's David Edelstein says, "The Ben Stiller action-film parody Tropic Thunder is all over the map, but it’s worth enduring the botched gags, formula plotting, and even the racism to marvel at the genius of Robert Downey Jr."

Tropic Thunder has been getting a lot of hype for Robert Downey Jr.'s portrayal of an Oscar-winning actor who dyes his skin black in order to play a black character, as well as Tom Cruise's cameo as a cussing, overweight nut job. However, now the film is getting some negative attention from angry disabled groups.

The movie's satirical subplot involves a fake movie entitled Simple Jack, in which Ben Stiller's character plays a handicapped man. In some viral marketing, DreamWorks released a fake Simple Jack movie poster, fake preview along with the pretty offensive tag line: "Once upon a time, there was a retard."

Spokesperson for the Special Olympics, Peter Wheeler says: "We are asking people not to go to the movie and hope to bring a consciousness to people about using derogatory words about this population. That will be the start of a nationwide protest. We will continue to be vocal about the destructive effect of this film."

Twenty-two advocate groups plan to protest the film, including the Los Angeles premiere today.

DreamWorks argues that Tropic Thunder is not making fun of the disabled, but rather Hollywood's portrayal of the disabled and the obnoxious, insufferable actors who play them.

A DreamWorks rep said that they will not make any cuts to the film and added, "Tropic Thunder is an R-rated comedy that satirizes Hollywood and its excesses, and makes its point by featuring inappropriate and over-the top characters in ridiculous situations. The film is in no way meant to disparage or harm the image of individuals with disabilities."

Will Tropic Thunder knock The Dark Knight off it's throne?

When Robert Downey Jr., was down and out, he had planned to write a memoir detailing the highs and lows of his life. But now that his movie career has relaunched with Iron Man and this summer's highly-anticipated Tropic Thunder, Downey's memoir has been put on hold.

The 43-year-old star's memoir was to look at "the highs and lows of his life and career," according to OK! magazine. The lows have included drug busts and jail terms, and the book was due out later this year. However, according to the magazine, Downey has returned his advance to publishers HarperCollins and put his memoir on the backburner.

According to U.K. magazine Female First, Hugh Hefner wants actor Robert Downey Jr. to portray him in "Playboy," a movie in the works focusing on Hef's early years.

Hef was reportedly impressed by Downey's performance in "Iron Man." However, a rep for Downey says that while the actor is interested in the project, he won't commit until a script has been completed and a director has been named.

And while no shooting dates have been scheduled for "Playboy" yet, producers are apparently looking to start shooting the film in Chicago next summer. This may prove to be a scheduling conflict for Downey, since he has committed to shooting "Iron Man 2″ some time next year for a 2010 release.

For a guy whose career was in the bag about a decade ago, Robert Downey Jr. is sure turning up in a lot of films this year. One of the unlikeliest actors to be cast as a Marvel comics superhero will debut as "Iron Man" on May 2 when he plays Tony Stark, a billionaire who puts on full body armor to save the world.

Downey recently revealed he will also be making a cameo in the next “Incredible Hulk” movie. Apparently the Hulk and Iron Man will team up to save the world (what else?). If that’s not enough, the one-time Oscar nominee is also playing a small but controversial role in an upcoming Ben Stiller flick.

In a summer of comic-book and comic book-inspired blockbusters, Downey’s Iron Man may be the most anticipated because it’s not a sequel and it features an outstanding cast that includes Gwyneth Paltrow and Terrence Howard.

It will also be the first comic pic out of the box, beating the fourth “Indiana Jones” film to the screen by about three weeks.
