Rocco Mediate Shares Lead at British Open

Well, there may be an interesting story at the British Open after all.

Rocco Mediate, the relative unknown (by most casual golf fans) pro who took Tiger Woods to the limit in the U.S. Open is tied for first place at the British Open.

He's currently 1-under 69 and in a three-way tie with Graeme McDowell and Robert Allenby.

Meanwhile, Phil Mickelson shot a brutal 79 in the first round.

Johnny Miller Draws Ire For Rocco Mediate Comments

Just last week at the US Open, NBC golf analyst Johnny Miller drew the ire of many with a pair of ill-advised comments directed towards American-born Rocco Mediate.

Mediate, who finished second in an 18-hole playoff with Tiger Woods on Monday, is of Italian heritage, and to Miller, "looks like the guy who cleans Tiger's swimming pool."

Later in the Sunday round, Miller was quoted as saying "Guys with the name 'Rocco' don't get on the trophy."

On Friday, Miller and NBC issued a statement regarding the comments.

"I apologize to anyone who was offended by the remarks," he said. "My intention was to convey my affection and admiration for Rocco's everyman qualities and had absolutely nothing to do with his ethnicity."

Rocco Mediate Up One After Four U.S. Open Playoff Holes

With Tiger Woods and Rocco Mediate flying through their playoff round (analysts have it playing at less than 12 minutes per hole), we could have a US Open champ decided in a three hour, 36 minute round. Impressive stuff.

Rocco's Not So Modern Life

After an excellent comeback in the third round of the US Open, Tiger Woods shot just two over par on Sunday, putting him in a tie with Rocco Mediate heading into a tie-breaker which will be held on Monday.

Mediate, who finished Saturday in third place at one under, went even on the day to finish the four-day tournament below par. Woods and Mediate finished at one under.

Woods on the other hand sat in out-right first place heading into Sunday, but then shot two over par on the day allowing Mediate room to force the draw.

Lee Westwood, who found himself in second place after three days, shot two over par on Sunday, dropping him into third place.

The best performance of the day, however, belongs to Heath Slocum, whose six under performance vaulted him up 49 places into a tie for ninth.
