Contenders Consequence and Mary’s Follies both hope that the race stays on turf and doesn’t get rained off the track. Consequence has had only one race in the last three months. "She's a little thing, she doesn't need much training," said trainer Shug McGaughey. "I hope [1 1/8 miles] is not stretching her."

Mary’s Follies will be coming off a win in the Grade 3 Boiling Springs at Monmouth Park. Keertana won the Grade 3 Regret at Churchill, and is the only member of this field to have won at 1 1/8 miles. In eight starts she’s 3-2-1 and has earned over $179K along the way.

A good horse that’s making her debut in North America is Teamgeist (15-1). She’s coming off a disappointing return in the Floral Park on June 21, but she will hope to bounce back to her earlier form that won her the Grade I Beldame on dirt and the Grade I Matriarch on turf, and had her finish second in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic. She’s also a multiple graded stakes winner back home in Argentina and could easily surprise the field.

Convocation made a wide move to get second place in the Dwyer but has only one win in six starts, all this year. Warrior's Reward was the 4-5 favorite in the Dwyer and will again try to beat Kensei in the late stages of a race. The horse will break from the #4 post and will have seasoned jockey Calvin Borel aboard. He has won two of six starts for over $100K in earnings.

The next best odds in the field is the 5-1 for My Princess Jess. She won last year’s Lake George Stakes at Saratoga and the May 2 Beaugay Stakes (gr. IIIT) at Belmont. Rutherienne, Criticism and Carribean Sunset are all getting decent odds at 6-1. The longshots are Quiet Meadow (15-1), Indescribable (20-1), Tejida (15-1), and Colina Verde (20-1).

The $500,000 Diana Stakes will be the ninth race on Saratoga’s Saturday race card and should get underway around 5:14pm ET. A five-year-old gray mare named Forever Together will be looking to become the first horse since 1989 to repeat as the Diana Stakes Champion. She’s coming off a second-place finish in Belmont Park’s Just A Game Stakes on June 6; and she was also blocked by six horses going through the final turn. It will take an upset to stop her as the heavy favorite at 9-5.

Other horses of note include the 7-2 Bulls and Bears and the two Wayne Lucas horses that are getting 8-1; Soundman and Activity Report will look to upset and make a name for themselves against this talented field. Longshots include two horses at 10-1 (Louisvilleluminary and Nacho Friend) and two others at 15-1 (Interactif and Bricklayer).

Post time is scheduled for 5:31 EDT on Thursday. All the horses will carry 119 lbs.

Also worth a mention is Franny Freud who is getting 8-1 the night before the race. The long shots that could be a factor in the race include three horses at 15-1 by the names of Kinsolving, Sassy Image and That’s How I Roll. Cowgirl Mally is getting a tempting 10-1 and Vivid Colors is at 12-1. Wide Without Wine at 20-1 and Stormandaprayer at 50-1 have little chance to pay off their odds.

With jockey Robby Albarado aboard, he turned on the jets and drew even with the pacesetter Devine Park in the final stretch and finally won by 1 and 1/4 lengths.

“Curlin is meant for the big moment,” said trainer Steve Asmussen. “He takes it all in stride.”

Added Albarado: “He spoils us with his brilliance.”

Curlin appeared to be tired even though this was his first start in seven weeks and needed encouragement from Albarado to run the final furlong in 14 seconds. This was his debut at Saratoga but he has been a steady presence at the park in the mornings for most of this year.

This marks 10 victories in 14 starts for Curlin and this raised his total winnings to $9,796,800 moving him to second place in all time winnings for thoroughbreds, placing him just behind Cigar.

Curlin paid $2.70, $2.40 and $2.10.

Saratoga's official closing day is Monday, Sept. 1 and will end with a pair of exciting stakes races. First off is the 104th running of the $250,000 Gr. 1 Three Chimneys Hopeful Stakes, one of the most significant races for 2-year-olds nationwide. “The Hopeful Stakes has long held a unique place on the Saratoga stakes schedule, as the winner is automatically stamped as the crop’s first classic hopeful,” New York Racing Association President and CEO Charles Hayward said. Hallowed past winners include Secretariat in 1972 and Afleet Alex in 2004. This year's prominent nominees include Notonthesamepage, a speedy Wesley Ward-trained colt who placed second in the Tyro Stakes at Monmouth Park in July.

Second on the day's schedule at Saratoga is the Glens Falls Handicap for fillies and mares 3 years old and up, a Grade 3 race on turf. A potential rematch is in the works, as J'ray and Dyna's Lassie, one-two finishers in the Matchmaker Stakes earlier this month, have both been nominated.

Del Mar's second last day of summer racing kicks off with the Windy Sands Handicap, a one-mile race for 3-year-olds and up. Four-year-old Johnny Eves, winless in all five starts this year, will be looking to return to the form which saw him win the Gr. 1 Malibu Stakes in December. The $100,000 I'm Smokin Stakes is next and will feature California-bred 2-year-olds. Look for the Jerry Hollendorfer-trained Babs Moossa to try to add to his unbeaten streak with a third consecutive stakes win. Also looking to continue a two-win streak is Evita Argentina, who is a favorite among the probable starters in the $250,000 Gr. 1 Del Mar Debutante, a seven-furlong race for fillies 2 years old and up.

He will face a small field that will not include Big Brown—the connections of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes champion declined owner Jess Jackson's offer of a $50,000 charitable donation in exchange for Big Brown's participation. Instead, the field of possible contenders includes Star Plus, a Group 1 winner based in Argentina; Divine Park, unbeaten in his last three outings; and Out of Control, runner-up in his last two graded stakes races.

If Curlin is feeling any pressure to live up to expectations, he isn't showing it. The 2007 Horse of the Year has looked every bit the champion in his workouts, turning out an effortless breeze of half a mile in 49.14 in his final prep. "He's very professional," exercise rider Carlos Rosas said afterwards. "Once you step on the track, he knows what's going on. Right now, he knows what's coming. I think he's ready. He's ready to rumble."

The Steve Asmussen-trained 4-year-old has had an amazing 2008 campaign so far. With the exception of his runner-up finish at the Man o' War Stakes, Curlin has not lost this year. Recent wins in the $1M Stephen Foster Handicap, the $6M Dubai World Cup and the $175,000 Jaguar Trophy have padded his lifetime earnings to $9,296,800. All eyes will be on Curlin to see if he can add a win in the Woodward Stakes on Aug. 30 to his already impressive resume.
