Oklahoma, along with Texas and Texas Tech, finished the regular season at 7-1 and it looks like those three teams again will be fighting it out.

Texas (+150 to win Big 12), Oklahoma (+150) and Oklahoma State are ranked 2nd, 3rd, and 9th respectively in the AP Preseason poll, tied with the SEC for the most teams ranked within the top ten.

The North division has been the whipping boy for the South division for some time now. Not since 2003 has a team from the North knocked off a team from the South in the Big 12 championship game.

Even if Kansas or Missouri can win the North, everyone will wonder if they can beat a superpower from the South.

The Jayhawks have a 15-6 lead in the series, including an 84-74 victory in their last meeting in the 2008 Big 12 championship game. The Longhorns took the last regular-season meeting, 72-69 in Austin on Feb. 11, 2008.

Texas controls their own destiny on Saturday as far as keeping their season alive. A win in Lawrence may not be absolutely necessary to reach the NCAA tournament, but it would remove all doubt.

Not that this has been the greatest season in Longhorns history. They got back into the AP rankings after winning four of five games, but lost 68-59 at Oklahoma State (-1) on Saturday. It won’t be easy, of course, even in Austin. Blake Griffin is the likely national player of the year, and he put up 20 points and 10 rebounds in the first meeting between the two, a 78-63 Sooners win on Jan. 12.

The Longhorns have the talent to pull out of their funk, but playing smarter is a must. They will enjoy a definite size advantage against the Cowboys, who typically surround forward Marshall Moses with four guards.

This game offers a great opportunity for a pair of struggling teams. The Longhorns are on a three-game losing streak, while the Cowboys have dropped five of their last seven.

Oklahoma State needs to be hitting the outside shot to win and lately that has been a big problem. Their 34.3 shooting from 3-point range in conference play ranks 10th in the Big 12. Now the Longhorns face a Tigers team that is third in the nation in scoring, averaging 85.0 points.

A.J. Abrams, the Longhorns’ leading scorer, has shot 45.5 percent from 3-point range in three contests against the Tigers.

One area that needs major improvement if the Aggies want to pull off an upset is on the offensive end of the floor. Last Saturday the Aggies made only 16 field goals against Kansas and had just eight assists.

Texas coach Rick Barnes has had a week to prepare for Texas A&M and will probably add some wrinkles after altering both his lineup and his rotation in a win against Texas Tech.

Ohio State is no pushover, but the ‘Horns are better equipped at virtually every position. Texas QB Colt McCoy (32 TDs, seven INTs) was a Heisman candidate this year; Ohio State QB Terrelle Pryor (12 TDs, four INTs) is a redshirt freshman. The Texas defense held opponents to 18.6 points per game despite playing in the explosive Big 12. And kicker Hunter Lawrence (9-for-11) is one of the top kickers in college.

Texas will air out the ball in the cozy confines of the U of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale. Ohio State’s ground game would have had more of an advantage had this game been played outdoors. Maybe next year.

Last year’s handicapper heroes from Kansas have taken a step back from their Orange Bowl-winning effort. While the Jayhawks (6-4 SU, 5-4 ATS) are still a dangerous team under coach Mark Mangino, Kansas is just 0-4 SU and 2-2 ATS as an underdog this year. The ‘Horns are 10-0 SU and 6-4 ATS versus Baylor since 1998. However, the Bears have improved in their first season under coach Art Briles, who spent three years on Mike Leach’s staff at Texas Tech. Baylor has covered three of its last four games and nearly beat Missouri (-21) last week before falling 31-28.

The Longhorns have dropped the cash in their past two outings since starting the 2008 campaign at 7-0 ATS. But Texas has drawn most of the action in this matchup after opening Tuesday night as 26.5-point faves. Kickoff in Austin is at noon Eastern.
