With Rick DiPietro still nursing an injury, Joey MacDonald may be showing signs of fatigue in the Islanders net. He allowed five goals on 17 shots in his 16th consecutive start on Saturday and is 1-4-0 with a 4.00 goals-against average in his past five games after going 7-3-1 with a 2.40 GAA in his previous 11 starts.

The Leafs, winners of four of 13 home games this season, have scored only six goals during their three-game losing streak, one shy of a season high.

Since losing four of five to the Leafs, the Islanders are 5-2-0 in the last seven meetings. The home team is 26-6-1 in the last 33 meetings.

With Marian Hossa making his debut, the Detroit Red Wings open defense of their Stanley Cup championship tonight against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Backers of the Wings are already thinking repeat as the team is clearly the class of the NHL once again. They were one of the top money teams last season and should be expected to do the same this year.

One of the other Original Six teams is at the other end of the spectrum heading into the new season. After failing to reach the playoffs in three consecutive years for the first time ever, the Toronto Maple Leafs have decided to lean on their youth.

New head coach Ron Wilson will try to shape a team that no longer has Mats Sundin and features a roster that will have 10 players aged 25 and under. Do the Leafs have any shot tonight at stealing one in Motown? Get all your NHL Hockey Betting Odds in the Bodog Sportsbook today!

The NHL pre-season starts off on Sept. 20th with the New York Rangers visiting the Ottawa Senators; and the Pittsburgh Penguins playing host to the Tampa Bay Lightning. But the fun doesn’t stop there. There’s a lot to like about betting on the upcoming season. Here are a few choice nuggets to keep in mind:

Early-season value: With all the offseason moves there’s bound to be at least a few teams that the books are either over or under valuing. If you can catch on to these teams before the books do there’s cash to be made.

Betting the schedule: The schedule can sometimes give you a sizable advantage when making your NHL wagers. Teams playing three games in four nights often tend to lose that third game, while long West Coast road trips can also play havoc on East Coast teams. Look for any blip in the schedule that can be exploited.

No ties: Since the introduction of the shootout a few years ago the old NHL tie is long gone, so you don’t have to worry about losing money on a tie game.

Value in hot goaltenders: If a goalie is so hot he’s melting the ice there can be great value there if you get lucky and his team is visiting one of the top teams in the league.

Puckline betting: By betting the puckline you can actually make some real profit on big favorites by taking the set spread. If you’re looking for real profits, the puckline is your best option.

The Leafs sucking can make you money: Everyone knows the Leafs suck. Now you can make money off their crappy play by betting against them all winter.

Be like Gretzky: Unfortunately we’re not talking about The Great One, but instead about his wife, Janet. When hockey season rolls around you can wager on the NHL just like Janet Gretzky without the embarrassing police investigations

Fighting: It likely won’t do anything for your bankroll, but who doesn’t like a good fight?

Young stars: The NHL is bursting with young talent these days, led by Ovechkin, Crosby, and Malkin, and that means solid games and solid wagering for bettors

The surprise team: Every year recently there’s been at least one surprise team in the NHL. Last year it was Montreal. If you can predict who this year’s Montreal might be it could be worth a ton of cash.

NHL futures? We've got 'em. Place your bets today and get a jump-start on the hockey season.

Hockey Day in Canada, the annual celebration contrived by the CBC for TV ratings, opened its triple-header coverage Saturday with an Original Six battle between the best team in the league and one of the worst.

NHL bettors who backed the home underdog emerged with a big win as the Toronto Maple Leafs shocked the Detroit Red Wings in a 3-2 overtime victory at Air Canada Centre that's one of the biggest upsets of the season. The Leafs, who are mired in last place in the Northeast Division, paid +165 on the puckline (meaning a winning hockey bet of $100 would net $165). The betting total fell under 5.5 goals.

Nik Antropov beat Dominik Hasek with a slap shot 1:02 into overtime to lift the Leafs. Toronto captain Mats Sundin, rumored to be headed to Detroit in a trade, tied the game at 13:35 of the third period when his wrist shot eluded Hasek.

Vesa Toskala made 32 saves for the win.

In other NHL action:

New York Rangers 2, Philadelphia 0: In a fight-filled battle in Philadelphia, Steve Valiquette emerged unscathed. The Rangers’ backup goalie earned his second shutout of the Flyers in as many as starts by turning aside 31 shots. Nigel Dawes and Scott Gomez tallied. The game was marred by an injury to linesman Pat Dapuzzo, who was cut by a skate blade and left the ice bleeding. After Dapuzzo’s injury, the two teams engaged in fisticuffs following a hard check by Fydor Tyutin on Steve Downie. New York was a +120 underdog.

Pittsburgh 4, Los Angeles 2: Evgeni Malkin reached the 30-goal plateau with two goals and an assist as the Penguins paid -160 at home. The Penguins scored three times in the second period and took a 4-0 lead into the third period.
