It was Summer Bird, not Mine That Bird and jockey Calvin Borel, who came roaring down the long stretch and won the final jewel of the Triple Crown on Saturday.

Summer Bird, sent off at +1100 to win, gave jockey Kent Desormeaux a Belmont victory he desperately wanted. The longshot won the Belmont in just his fifth career start.

Summer Bird, trained by the recently licensed Tim Ice, returned US$25.80, $9.30, and $4.70. Dunkirk paid $5.40 and $3.60, and Mine That Bird returned $2.60 to show.

Charitable Man was fourth Saturday, followed by Luv Gov, Flying Private, Brave Victory, Mr. Hot Stuff, Chocolate Candy, and Miner's Escape.

The Belmont remains a race usually reserved for longshots. The favorite has won only six of the last 30 runnings of the longest and most grueling of the Triple Crown races.

The Belmont Stakes, the final and longest leg of the Triple Crown goes down June 6th at 6:30 p.m. ET – and we've just gotten word on your Belmont Stakes 2009 Lineup, with 11 horses slated to compete in the final race. The 141st Belmont Stakes lineup does not include Preakness winner Rachel Alexandra, but will be led by Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird whose winning jockey, Calvin Borel, will try to score yet another victory.

Borel said, “Now that this decision is made, I am excited to come to New York and ride Mine That Bird in the Belmont Stakes. I would like to thank Chip Woolley, and [owners] Mark Allen and Dr. Leonard Blach for being so gracious and allowing us to wait for this decision. We also thank Mr. Jackson for letting everyone know earlier than anticipated about the decision whether to run Rachel Alexandra.”

On Friday, Rachel Alexandra's owner Jess Jackson ended speculation about her run in the Belmont by saying he believes the filly would benefit from more time between races.

"We know the media and many fans would have liked to see her run in the Belmont Stakes – we feel the same," Jackson said in a press release. "But all of us sincerely interested in the horse must agree that we only want to see her run when it is best for her. While she is in great shape, having strong works, and recovering well from her amazing performances, we feel Rachel deserves a well-earned vacation. Since March 14, Rachel has won four graded races with just two weeks' rest between her last two victories. We will always put her long-term well-being first. And, of course, we want to run her when she is fresh."

The Belmont Stakes 2009 Lineup is as follows: Mine That Bird, Brave Victory, Charitable Man, Chocolate Candy, Dunkirk, Flying Private, Luv Gov, Miner’s Escape, Mr. Hot Stuff, Summer Bird and tentatively, Nowhere To Hide.

He won the 2009 Kentucky Derby with Mine That Bird, then the 2009 Preakness Stakes atop Rachel Alexandra. A win at the Belmont Stakes will make jockey Calvin Borel the first jockey to win the Triple Crown since Steve Cauthen in 1978.

As of Monday, jockey Calvin Borel has yet to decide on whether he will ride Mine That Bird or Rachel Alexandra at the 2009 Belmont Stakes on June 6th at Belmont Park. Borel's indecision comes as little surprise as it has not yet been determined if the Preakness Stakes winner will be running in the Belmont.

Mine That Bird's co-owners Mark Allen and Dr. Leonard Blach are being patient with Borel and are holding off on their decision as to who will ride the Derby winner at the Belmont.

"We will hold off on naming a rider out of respect for Calvin," said trainer Bennie Woolley Jr. “He won the Derby for us. He deserves the time it takes to make the right decision."

Looking for Belmont Stakes futures? Currently, Mine That Bird is listed at 7/4 odds to win the Belmont Stakes while Rachel Alexandra is listed at 3/1 odds to win.

Calvin Borel had piloted +5000 favored Mine That Bird to the Kentucky Derby triumph, but elected to switch to Rachel Alexandra for the one million dollar Preakness when new owner Jess Jackson decided to test her against colts.

Rachel Alexandra went off as the +180 favorite in the 13-horse field, and became the first horse to win the Preakness from the number 13 post.

She paid $5.60, $4.60, and $3.60. Mine That Bird returned $6.60 and $4.80, while Musket Man paid $5 to show.

Filly Rachel Alexandra is the winner of the 134th Preakness Stakes! With the rain beginning to come down right before post time, the handicappers were in a frenzy. The grandstands at Pimlico Racetrack in Baltimore, Maryland, were full of horse enthusiasts as the Win/Place/Show finishers crossed the line, completing the second leg of the Triple Crown. The top three finishers for the 2009 Preakness Stakes are Rachel Alexandra, Mine That Bird and Musket Man.

The second leg of the Triple Crown is over, with the running of the 141st running of the Belmont Stakes on Saturday, June 6th, 2009 at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y.
The 2009 Triple Crown is shaping up to have a competitive group of three-year-olds by the time May 2 rolls around in Kentucky. It's a bit early to count on any horse at this point in time; much can change over the next four months. The early Triple Crown nominations will close on January 24 and late nominations close March 28.

The frontrunners right now are the John Ward trained Beethoven (3-0-1 in five starts), Midshipman (3-1-0 in four starts) who earned over $1.3M, the Doug O'Neill trained Square Eddie (2-2-1 in six starts), and the Bobby Frankel trained Stardom Bound (3-2-0 in five starts), who has earned $1.4M.

Some of these horses may not be as good as a three-year-old, and some other three-year-olds are sure to improve and force their way into the Triple Crown contender picture.
Ismael Valenzuela, age 73, more commonly known as "Milo" has received an early induction to the National Museums of Racing Hall of Fame. The winner of 2,545 races during a career that spanned almost 30 years will attend a special ceremony in Santa Anita Sunday evening, as he is unable to travel to Saratoga Springs for the annual induction ceremony.

Born Christmas day 1934 in McNary, Texas, Valenzuela was one of 22 children in his family, who relocated back to their native Mexico shortly after his birth. He returned to the United States at the age of 14 to work with quarter horses, all the while sending money home to help support his parents.

From that point on, Valenzuela embarked on a career as a jockey that saw him come just short of winning the Triple Crown in 1958 with Tim Tam. He also was the most frequent rider of Kelso, who won 22 of 35 races, and was named Horse of the Year 5 consecutive times between 1960 and 1964.

As part of the ceremony, Valenzuela will receive the traditional jacket and plaque, presented courtesy of Hall of Fame trustee Beverly Lewis. Ismael Valenzuela was long considered to be one of the sports greats, and many consider his induction to the Hall of Fame a formality.
