Soccer fans are salivating because an unprecedented number of top-flight matches will take place in the United States and Canada all summer long.

Many of the 101 games in the 51-day period called "The Summer of Soccer" involve Major League Soccer, whose clubs will take on popular European and Mexican clubs such as FC Barcelona, AC Milan, Chelsea FC, Club America, and Real Madrid.

One of the big highlights of the event is the long-awaited opening of the Cowboys’ Stadium in Arlington, Texas, which will host its first sporting event on July 19, a CONCACAF Gold Cup quarterfinal doubleheader.

The odds say Arsenal’s pride will be broken. United are –150 favorites on their home pitch with Arsenal pegged at +450 and the draw at +235. Old Trafford has been very kind to the Red Devils, who have 16 wins in 18 matches there with one loss to second-place Liverpool and one draw. The Gunners have a very good away record at nine wins, six draws and three losses; however, their most recent game was a 4-1 defeat at home to Chelsea that has local fans pining for an offseason upgrade. The odds for this match at press time were virtually the same as they were Tuesday for Manchester United at Arsenal. The visitors have a slight edge at +155 to Chelsea’s +165, with the draw priced at +230 and the under tagged at –120 on a total of 2.5 goals. Blues manager Guus Hiddink got a premium defensive effort (Barca supporters would say “dirty”) out of his squad in the first leg; they failed to get an away goal, but they’ll have an easier time Wednesday without defenders Carles Puyol and Rafael Marquez in the way.

Don’t forget, that’s –500 using the standard home-away-draw betting line for soccer. Portsmouth is priced at +1200 to pull off what would be a dramatic upset; even nailing down a draw at the Theatre of Dreams is a tall task at +500. United won nine of their last 10 meetings with one draw, which took place in 2007 at Fratton Park as Wayne Rooney sat out injured.

The betting public has big expectations for Chelsea after picking up six wins in seven EPL matches under new manager Guus Hiddink. The Blues have also advanced past Liverpool into the Champions League semifinals. Everton’s elimination of Manchester United in the FA Cup semis (on penalties after a goalless draw) was assisted by Sir Alex Ferguson’s decision to play a watered-down starting 11 without Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar. The draw is priced at +220; this is the default value play in soccer, with an excellent chance of cashing in when there is no clear-cut favorite.

Three other matches fall into this category: Lyon-Barcelona, Real Madrid-Liverpool, and Sporting Lisbon-Bayern Munich. The home favorites in the other four games deserve extra handicapping attention, but keep the draw in mind, as well.

Some of these matches are closer than they appear. In Group C, Barcelona and Sporting Lisbon are fighting it out for top spot with Barcelona holding a one-point lead. In Group D Atlético Madrid and Liverpool are locked in a stalemate with eight points each after four games.

The same can be said in Group E with Manchester United and Villarreal both sitting with eight points each.

Group F is tight as well, with Lyon and Bayern Munich both having two wins and eight points.

Arsenal holds a slight lead in Group G over FC Porto, while Juventus sits comfortably four points ahead of Real Madrid in Group H.

As Europe’s biggest clubs flex their muscles in search of one of soccer’s biggest prizes, the early part of the competition has been a mere appetizer ahead of the main course of the knockout phase.

Chelsea sits on top of Group A with seven points, Inter Milan leads Group B with seven points, and Barcelona holds top spot in Group C with nine points.

Liverpool are in a good position following a 1-1 draw last week at Atletico Madrid. That result left the two teams tied for top spot in Group D with seven points.

Manchester United leads Group E with seven points, while Bayern Munich has the same point total to lead Group F.

Arsenal, fresh from a fine 5-2 trashing of Fenerbahce in Turkey, holds top spot in Group G with seven points.

Rounding out the leaders is Juventus, who leads Group H with seven points.
