The 2008 regular season once again proved that baseball is still as popular as ever. Fans helped set the second-highest attendance mark in history, drawing 78,624,324, falling just below last year’s record of 79,502,524 in paid attendance. So what ballparks had the best regular season numbers?

1. Yankee Stadium (Yankees) 4,298,655
2. Shea Stadium (Mets) 4,042,047
3. Dodger Stadium (Dodgers) 3,730,553
4. Busch Stadium (Cardinals) 3,430,660
5. Citizens Bank Park (Phillies) 3,422,583

Both New York teams certainly cashed in on the interest in seeing the last games in both Yankee and Shea Stadiums.

The Yankees, Mets, and Phillies were part of a group of seven teams that set all-time franchise records for home attendance. Clearly the weak economy, high gas prices, and wild weather did not impact attendance as much as expected. Can't wait until next season.

The New York Rangers would like to host an outdoor NHL hockey game at Yankee Stadium next season.

"It's something we've spoken both to the Yankees and to the city about," NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly told the New York Daily News. "But it's not a done deal. There are still other possibilities and a lot of moving pieces."

The fact an outdoor hockey game could be the last event ever at Yankee Stadium will have many baseball historians up in arms. The Yankees are moving to a new stadium next year.

Said one grammatically challenged commenter on The News: "Are they out of their Minds..? The greatest venue in the history of Baseball, and their not going to let it rest in peace after a MLB game…hopefully a World Series..? Geezus…just open my casket 2 months after I'm dead so people I don't even know can have a wake..? Why would they possible desecrate the Stadium like this..?"

The NHL hosted the 2008 Winter Classic in Buffalo to rave reviews (except, apparently, the Bodog Beat.)
