After finishing second to Zardana in Saturday's New Orleans Ladies at the Fair Grounds, Rachel Alexandra's owner Jesse Jackson has decided not to run his 2009 Horse of the Year in the $5 million Apple Blossom Invitational on April 9 at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark.

"Yesterday's race while a disappointment, helped us define Rachel Alexandra's racing condition," Jackson said in a statement on Sunday. "While she is healthy, just as I had anticipated, she is not in top form. Therefore, I decided today she will not be going to the Oaklawn Invitational on April 9."

Zenyatta, on the other hand, won her 2010 racing debut at the $250,000 Santa Margarita Invitational on Saturday and maintains her perfect record. She's still off to Oaklawn Park in Arkansas for the Grade I Apple Blossom, but with the highly anticipated matchup between Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra called off, the $5 million purse will be replaced by the race's original purse of $500,000.

No worries. Bodog's still got all your horse racing odds.

Unbeaten filly Rachel Alexandra will run in Saturday's $200,000 New Orleans Ladies at the Fair Grounds, the prep race before she and Zenyatta meet for the first time in the Apple Blossom on April 9. Meanwhile, the unbeaten Zenyatta will make her 2010 debut Saturday, in the Santa Margarita at Santa Anita.

Rachel Alexandra drew the No. 2 post position and will face Zardana, who is trained by Zenyatta's trainer, John Shirreffs. With regular jockey Calvin Borel aboard, Rachel will also face Fighter Wing, Unforgotten and Clear Sailing.

On Monday, Rachel Alexandra breezed 4 furlongs in 49 seconds in her seventh workout this year.

Her trainer Steve Asmussen said Rachel "went beautiful … did very well, looked good."

In a Feb. 10 press release owner of Rachel Alexandra, Jesse Jackson, called for a racing series between the Horse of the Year and Zenyatta, but at that time nothing had been decided. Late Thursday a new agreement had been reached between the owners of both horses to bring the two together in the Grade 1 Apple Blossom at the Hot Springs, Ark. track. The $500,000 purse has been increased to $5,000,000 and the date has been moved from Saturday, Apr. 3 to Friday, Apr. 9.

In a Boston Herald report trainer Steve Asmussen said the reason behind the date change was because "the earliest we could have a prep race would be the middle of March" and that it was "not fair to Rachel to ask her to race again three weeks later."

Online horse racing bettors will be interested to note that both Zenyatta and Rachel Alexandra have won at Oaklawn in the past; Zenyatta won the 2008 Apple Blossom at Oaklawn and Rachel Alexandra won the Martha Washington Stakes and the Grade II Fantasy Stakes at Oaklawn.

The Four Seasons Beverly Wilshire Hotel played host to this year's Eclipse Awards and as many predicted the award for Horse of the Year went to (drum roll please) Rachel Alexandra. In total, the three-year-old filly received 130 first place votes, while Zenyatta (the only other horse up for the award) took 99 votes.

Accepting the trophy of the evening for Rachel Alexandra, owner Jess Jackson had this to say: "As long as Rachel is able to run and compete at the top level, we look forward to running at least another year."

What's interesting is that Rachel Alexandra and Zenyatta have never raced each other and if you were to ask Zenyatta's owner Jerry Moss which of the two is more deserving of the Horse of the Year award — well, see for yourself: "Zenyatta's never lost, she's perfect. Nobody's beaten her on the racetrack, so they beat her by proxy as far as I'm concerned."

Zenyatta won the Eclipse Award as the top older female for the second straight year, while Rachel Alexandra was voted top three-year-old filly. Steve Asmussen, Rachel Alexandra's trainer, took home the award for (you guessed it) top trainer.

The Eclipse Awards are voted on by members of the National Turf Writers' Association, the Daily Racing Form and the National Thoroughbred Racing Association.

No matter how you look at it, the great debate between which horse will or should win the Eclipse Award – American Horse of the Year is particularly interesting because it involves two females. The last female horse to win the American Horse of the Year Award was Azeri in 2002.

So, Rachel Alexandra or Zenyatta? Which one's got your vote?
Get all your online horse racing odds at Bodog Racebook.

Rachel Alexandra went 8 for 8 this year, posted three wins over the boys — including her impressive win in the Preakness Stakes. For that victory she became the first filly in 85 years to one-up the dudes.

"The one thing everybody keeps forgetting, she beat the fillies with authority," Mine That Bird trainer Chip Woolley Jr. said of Rachel Alexandra. "She didn't win by a neck or a length or two lengths. She beat 'em by 20 and in a big gallop. When you look at that and you put everything together, I think she's a very deserving champion."

Zenyatta, on the other hand, went 5 for 5 this year and last weekend's Breeders' Cup Classic win was her first against the boys. And it will likely be her last as trainer John Shirreffs says she will be sent to Kentucky for breeding. (Rachel Alexandra will be back next season, however.)

Still, some are quick to judge Rachel Alexandra for skipping out on the Breeders' Cup, which is considered a championship event.

"Each sport has their championship game," said Summer Bird's trainer Tim Ice. "If you don't compete in the championship game, then you shouldn't be a champion. This is the highlight of the year as far as all the great horses coming together. This should name Horse of the Year."

Looking back at Curlin — he took the American Horse of the Year awards two years in a row, winning it in 2007 and 2008. He did not, however, win the Breeders's Cup Classic both years. Curlin won the Breeders' Cup Classic in 2007 and it was Raven's Pass who claimed that victory in 2008.

The American Horse of the Year — along with all other Eclipse Awards — will be announced in January at the Beverly Hills ceremony.

Interesting indeed. Bet on horse racing at Bodog.
